Bryce nods slowly, his blue eyes wide. “Your Mom is right. Spanish curses are far more expressive.”
We laugh.
“Where is el pendejo now?” Dad asks.
“Split, Croatia.” Bryce says.
“Are you sure it’s him?” Ciara asks.
“My team is coordinating with contacts there to nail his exact location as we speak.”
“I want to believe Brad will be brought to justice, but it seems… so quick,” I say. “Your team has only been tracking him down for a week, and you didn’t have much to go by.”
“In my world, a week is enough time to gather valuable intel. In many cases, we catch the bad guys in a matter of days. Everyone leaves a digital print. Not to mention, with the means, you can speed things up,” he says. “To answer your sister’s question and your concern, we’re certain it’s him.”
The asshole is going to pay for what he did.
“I don’t want to question your expertise, Bryce, but how can you be so sure?” Dad asks.
“On my way to the office, after a lunch meeting, I was scrolling through the announcement of Apple’s new CEO. Entertainment based publications bypassed his name, referring to him as Late Night with Alwyn Breyer’s doppelgänger. That’s when the lightbulb went on.”
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“Remember I asked you what Brad looked like? You said, he’s host’s doppelgänger.”
“I did,” I say, “but I don’t follow. How is this relevant?”
“After reading those articles, I contacted the team leader on your case and asked him to create a Google Alert for Alwyn Breyer’s name to see what comes up. He agreed and informed me of an important tidbit. Brad’s full name is Bradley Elijah Michael Hyler.”
“I didn’t know that,” I say.
“Did you know he had dual citizenship?" Bryce asks.
My jaw drops.
“Which countries?” Ciara asks.
“US and Canada,” Bryce says. “He’s Canadian.”
“He crossed the border?” Dad asks.
Bryce shifts his attention to my father. “Brad crossed the north and south borders.”
The four of us stare at him with our faces scrunched up in confusion.
“He entered Mexico as Bradley Hyler. However, three months later, Elijah Michael bought a ticket to Winnipeg with a stopover in Denver. Two weeks after that, the same person bought a ticket from Winnipeg to Toronto. Three days later, Elijah Michael was heading to Bulgaria.”
“And now he’s in Croatia?” Mom asks.
Bryce nods. “He spent six weeks in Bulgaria. It’s easy for him to travel throughout Europe by car or train—so less security scrutiny than what he’d receive at the airport.”
“But you’re not certain it’s Brad?” Dad insists.
“We are, Emilio.”
“How can you be so sure?” Mom asks.
“My team leader contacted me a couple hours ago to let me know a Google Alert landed in his inbox. He forwarded it to me. I read it, got in a taxi, and headed straight to Sofia’s house. Our earlier… introduction is the reason I’m only sharing the news now.” Bryce grabs his phone, powers it, taps on his screen, and hands it to me.
