Cassandra Fitz-James was my part-time admin-slash-jack-of-all-trade at my former short-lived company. She witnessed my demise.
My skin heats with anger at the memory of the day I woke to the fact I had been too trusting, and got screwed ten ways to Sunday.
“I’m sure I don’t have to spell it out. Bryce Van Der Linden is very rich—”
“I don’t want him to every think I saw him as an ATM machine.”
“You don’t have an escort gig and you owe a lot of people a lot of money.” No need to remind me. It’s top of mind every fucking minute of the day.
“That sums up my pathetic life. Except, you forgot, the big fight with Bryce over money.”
“Would you go back to being a real estate broker?” she asks.
“My name carries baggage. Not to mention, as a broker I’d work on commissions. I need money coming at a more predicable rate.”
Worry etches itself on Cassie’s face. “What are you going to do?”
“I need to find a job that pays well and that doesn’t involve me servicing men or shaking my naked tatas on stage. Porn is a hard pass. Same for nude webcam porn videos of me touching myself for an audience.” My lips stretch into a thin line. “Basically, I’m looking for a miracle.”
Chapter 29
Sofia
This is a solid start.
Three hours of diligent searches later, and I have a list of potential job openings to target.
If I can’t find anything full-time, two or three part-time jobs should keep me afloat.
“Argh!”
Who the fuck am I kidding?
I push my laptop computer to the middle of the kitchen table, plant my elbows on the surface, and bury my face in my hands.
Dear God, please put me out of my misery.
If I were to get hit by lightning, at least, I’d go down with dignity. Unlike going down because I trusted a shyster.
I always accused Ciara of being a cynic.
Maybe I should’ve drank a little of her Kool-Aid.
My phone rings, jerking me out of my wallowing.
I lift my head.
Speaking of Queen Cynic.
I snatch my phone from the table.
“Hey,” I say accepting the video call.
My sister squints her brown eyes at me. “Did someone kick your puppy?”
“It’s been a long day.”
“It can’t be easy doing translations for hours on end.”
