With way too many questions swirling through her head, she let herself into the dormitory building. Kodiak’s room lay at the end of the hall, and she used his hidden key to let herself inside.

His musky scent immediately wrapped about her and reminded her of his absence. Her mind buzzed as memories of their stolen time together at the hut boarded her infinite train of thought. Being in Kodiak’s room wouldn’t help her rest, but at least she’d feel close to him again.

In a few more hours, she’d know for sure whether he was okay. She just hoped against the brewing heaviness in her gut that her instincts were wrong, that he would be all right.

Lying on his bed, she covered her eyes as if pushing back tears. She couldn’t stay stuck in this limbo, being neither human nor wolf shifter. She had to change.

How the fuck was she going to survive in the pack if Kodiak didn’t come back?

CHAPTER 20

Tamaska

The desire to taste it overwhelmed her. She smelled the iron hidden inside red blood like never before. It sent her body shivering with hunger, a hunger laced with so many unfamiliar emotions.

She tracked her prey with heightened senses, enjoying how hard it tried to lure her in. She ran her tongue over her teeth, savoring the feel of her elongated incisors, sharp and ready to sink into living flesh.

She turned to see a male human standing chained, restrained, terrified.

She froze.

This wasn’t right.

Didn’t wolves track deer, rabbits, mice? Not humans. They protected humans.

She stepped back, her desire to kill evaporated while her blood craving remained.

I have to feed.

The look of terror in the human’s eyes stopped her.

He knows I’m going to kill him. But I’m not a killer.

A being appeared next to her.

Expecting to see Kodiak, she turned, ready to fall into his embrace. She couldn’t wait to hear his confident explanation. What was happening to her?

She gasped as her eyes locked on the man.

No. Not man.

Vampire.

Amdis

What are you doing here? She asked without speaking.

Do you want me to show you how? He grinned around protruding fangs, ready to feast.

No! I’m not a vampire. She reeled backwards, falling away from him.

He laughed. Take a closer look.

She looked down at the ground, expecting to see paws. Instead, she saw her feet. She lifted her hands to see pale skin.

You need to feed. Amdis moved closer to her.

But I’ve been turned.
