“Kodiak will kill you if you puke in his car,” Tamaska muttered.

“See? She’s learning quick.” Channing patted her on the knee.

“Not quick enough. Since we are talking about my computer once more and guilt and blame aisde, you know that you fucked up all my searches?” said Ash.

“I didn’t. I made them better,” Tamaska said, suddenly sitting forward. “I promise.”

“How?”

“You obviously didn’t have time to look at them properly. Otherwise you’d know that I’m closer to this pack than you realize.”

“What did you find out?” Ash asked tightly.

Tamaska swallowed hard. She had to tell them. Why was it so hard? She knew though. Kodiak wasn’t here. She wanted him to hear it from her.

And maybe in regards to becoming a shifter it wasn’t much. After all, she wasn’t purebred like the rest of the pack. Even though she had shifter genes, she would still need to be turned.

But the rest of it…there was something there. But she needed to get it right in her head, she needed—

“Nothing. You found nothing, just as I expected,” snapped Ash. “And fucked up all my searches while you were at it. You’ll have to wait even longer to be turned while I sort it all out.”

“I have wolf shifter genes.” The words tumbled from Tamaska’s mouth before she could think them over.

“Like fucking hell, you do,” said Ash.

“My ancestry traces back to the Browns.”

“The Browns?” asked Channing with a whistle.

So, it was true. The surname did mean something.

“You said Lane. Not Brown. Lane. Why did…shit.” Ash slowed a little.

“My grandparents bought the Blood Opal with them to Australia,” continued Tamaska, “and then sold it because they needed the money.”

“What?” exclaimed Ash. Her foot came off the gas pedal as she turned to look at Tamaska. “No way!”

“Look out!” yelled Roan as a car approached them from behind a little too quickly.

“Fuck.” Ash swerved. The overtaking driver narrowly missed sideswiping Kodiak’s mirror, laying on the horn as they passed.

“Yes, and I think the vampires want me in addition to the Blood Opal because it will amplify my wolf side.”

“What would that achieve?” asked Channing. “Apart from a lot of dead vamps!”

“An out-of-control wolf,” Ash whispered, worry spreading across her face.

Ash’s words confirmed Tamaska fears. The vampires’ attacks were a calculated effort to capture the Blood Opal and her.

The near-destruction of Shadow Pack was all her fault. Knowing that, there was no way they would ever accept her into the pack.

CHAPTER 19

Tamaska

He should be back by now.

She switched off the carpet cleaner, having cleaned the last of the bloodied carpet. Her ears rang with echoes of the machine’s loud whirring, nose stinging with the special chemicals she’d been given.
