Her fingers curled tight. And just maybe he’d decided to go after the vampires and get himself killed.

She swallowed that one down, deep.

Ash and Onai discussed the situation, trying to figure out what was going on, while Channing reviewed the footage again for anything that could give them a clue about Kodiak’s intentions.

The same two safe questions played in her mind on repeat. What had happened to him, and what would she do if he didn’t come back?

“Do you think he’s left us for good?”

“Do you, Tamaska?” asked Onai.

“No.” Could she be sure? But she raised her chin. She didn’t think any of them thought he would, her included. It was nice they asked her but… They asked her. Like she counted.

But she’d trade that acceptance for him coming in through the doors at this moment.

“But…” She licked her dry lips. “I just don’t know why he’d do this, or where he’d go.”

Unless he went after the vampires.

Tamaska had said it before and if she kept saying it…what if it made it true?

“This isn’t like him. Something’s up,” said Onai, pushing a hand through his hair. “Maybe he got bitten by one of the vampires, or they infected him with something.”

“Roan checked him out last night, though,” said Ash. “No marks or bites. He was weak, but…that was to be expected. There was nothing that even remotely suggest they did something to him other than get violent.”

Her stomach lurched at that.

“Or maybe,” Tamaska said, “he just left because he could. And he’s a rat bastard.”

“I’ll go find him. You two stay here and watch in case he comes back.” Onai hurried away.

Ash looked at her. “Men.”

“I’m definitely going to kill him,” said Tamaska. “I don’t care if he went for a drive or went vampire hunting, I’m killing him.” She paused. “Kodiak. Not Onai.”

“Figured.” Ash sighed. “You might have to get in line. Onai’s pretty worked up. He’s not showing it like a normal person, but I know him and he’s worked up.”

“Me too,” she muttered.

“He is, but so am I. On the inside.” Ash grimaced. “And he is being a rat bastard. Kodiak. Not Onai.”

“I know who you meant.” Tamaska flexed her fingers, then tightened them into fists. “And he better not kill him before I do.”

Onai had barely made it halfway down the driveway in his vehicle when another car came into sight.

Not just any car…

“It’s Kodiak’s,” said Tamaska, jumping to her feet. She was halfway out of the room when Ash grabbed her arm. “Let me go.”

“Hang on,” said Ash.

“Why?” She looked at the hand. “Let me go I have to go to him.”

“I thought you wanted to kill him? You can’t do that if you’re running into his arms, stressed out of your mind.”

She opened her mouth and closed it again as Ash leaned in.

“I mean, he does deserve to suffer, so take a few minutes, calm down and bring on the pain. Make him suffer. No one else can, you know.”
