Tamaska smiled. Maybe a grey area existed for her within the pack after all, a role where she could belong without having to be so submissive.
“I did save your ass,” teased Tamaska.
“Yes, lucky for me, you did. I think I’ve still got you beat, though.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve saved your ass more.” He reached around her waist and pinched her hard on the ass.
“Ouch.” She laughed, slapping away his hand.
“Damn Roan for giving me those pills.” Kodiak drew his hand back, letting it droop to his side. “Otherwise, I’d give you a thorough checkup.”
“When you wake up, then.” She squeezed him tight. She was grateful they were together and they’d survived another vampire attack.
But it wasn’t over. Would they survive the next one?
CHAPTER 29
Tamaska
She awoke, terrible pain throbbing in her arm, a reminder of her unwelcome, improper change. She snuggled closer to Kodiak and tried to ignore it and find comfort in her dreams.
But those seemed to be light in supply for her.
Light streamed into the room, and Kodiak remained asleep, thanks to the medication.
She took a slow breath as she let herself dive into the moment. Of what it was and what it meant.
She was here. With Kodiak.
He’s asked her to be his mate, his parter, one of his pack. She’d nearly lost him. On so many levels, she’d nearly lost him. But now…
He slept. Alive. Hers. Safe.
Tamaska sighed softly and ran her fingers over the side of his face, her skin tingling at his warmth. Reveling in the stubble there.
Yes. She had come too close to losing him. Way too close.
It wouldn’t happen again. She would chain herself to him if she had to. She smiled to herself. She wouldn’t have to do that to stay connected with him, not since she’d learned the true nature of their bond.
Her head still spun a little at that, how the bond was more than love or duty or something like marriage, it was belonging, love and blood and bone and minds and hearts. They were mates.
And it was all such a beautiful thing.
Like him.
He could make her want to spit broken glass when he got her mad and she’d crawl over fire to save him. He could also make her melt with a look or a touch or a word, and they made love…
“Kodiak,” she whispered, wanting to say his name, like it cemented everything.
The bond was strength and warmth flowing between them, reassuring her of their connection, was like nothing she’d ever felt before. Is this what it meant to be a wolf, to be part of a pack? If it did, she rather liked it.
Hunger drove her away from the comfort of the bed. Who knew when he would wake up? She felt the pills were strong because the man was like an ox, and to get him asleep would take a lot. The fact he’d fought the silver so hard for so long…
He needed the sleep.
Of course, having thought that, he’d most likely wake soon.
