Finally, he slowed to a stop and leaned over her. His expression sobered as he studied her face. Without a word, he slanted his mouth over hers, claiming her with a kiss deeper and more meaningful than she could ever have expected after that whimsical dance.
Kinsley closed her eyes, settled a hand on his face, and leaned into that kiss. Their lips caressed each other, and their tongues danced in a much different way, fueling the desirous spark in her core.
Breath ragged, Vex pressed his forehead against hers. “You see, Kinsley? There are rewards to reap by throwing yourself at me.”
Kinsley grinned as she opened her eyes. “I fell.”
“No matter what you call it, Kinsley, the result is unchanged. You are in my arms.”
“Did you seek me out just to have your wicked way with me?” She twirled her fingers in his hair. “Because if you did, I’m okay with that.”
“Should these ones leave?” Echo asked.
Kinsley turned her head to see the three wisps floating together near the table where she’d stacked the interesting books she’d found today. Next to that stack was a green bottle of wine, a pair of plain bronze goblets, and a plate with sliced fruit and cheese, all of which Vex must’ve set down while she was distracted.
“That depends entirely upon my mate’s current appetites,” Vex replied huskily as he nuzzled her neck.
His voice made her belly flutter and her skin tingle. But however much she would’ve enjoyed sex with him right here, right now, she knew that once they started, they wouldn’t stop. Everything else would be forgotten, including the books she’d set aside to have him read and the food he’d just brought.
Would that be such a bad thing?
Was it possible to live solely on sex?
I am immortal now…
God, Kinsely, stop it!
“Nope! You three stay.” Kinsley looked at Vex sternly. “It’s story time.”
He chuckled. “As you command, my love.”
Holding her close, he released her legs and let her body slowly slide down his. The action stimulated Kinsley’s overly sensitive nipples and sent shivers of pleasure through her. Though it took hardly any time at all, she was already breathless and gripping his forearms when her feet touched the floor.
With a grin, Vex leaned toward her and whispered. “We may yet send them away.”
“Tease.” Kinsley gave his shoulder a playful nudge. “You know the wisps enjoy story time as much as I do. And we shouldn’t let the food go to waste.” Keeping her eyes on his, Kinsley lowered her voice and traced his bottom lip with fingertip. “We have all night for…other activities.”
Vex hummed thoughtfully, seductively, and caught her hand, holding it in place as he pressed a kiss to her finger. “Nightfall cannot arrive swiftly enough.” He released her hand and took a step back. “Show me what has piqued your curiosity today.”
Resisting the temptation to drag him back to her, Kinsley walked to the table and waved at the small stack of books she’d collected. “These. But this one”—she picked up the top book—“I really want to know more about.”
Vex accepted the book when she held it out, brushing his fingers across the weathered black cover.
“Flare said it was a journal that belonged to a realmswalker?”
“Indeed.” He carefully opened the book, smoothing the yellowed parchment within, which was slightly damaged along the edges. “She called herself Alythrii, which means—”
“Carried by wind?”
“Just so,” Vex replied with a smile. “It is an ancient unseelie dialect.”
Their reading sessions had brought up many such instances—alien words and names that Kinsley understood instinctually thanks to the potion. It had been odd the first few times, but she was growing used to the sensation of…knowing.
“So, she was unseelie. Does that mean she was like you?” Kinsley asked.
Vex closed the book, and with a flick of his wrist, summoned a set of ethereal green hands that collected the food, wine, and goblets. Kinsley followed him to their usual place in the reading nook, where they’d piled pillows and blankets. The wisps and Vex’s arcane hands came right behind them.
“I suspect she was not,” Vex said as he sat, spreading his thighs to make space for Kinsley. “Alythrii makes no mention of her people in the journal, but she was likely a highborn fae.”
