Tiny moonstones dangled from the chain, each shimmering with its own rainbow in the firelight. When the magic faded, the chain had encircled her midsection.
Awed, Kinsley ran her fingers over the chains. Their solid metal warmed against her skin.
“Much better.” Vex’s hand followed the chain’s path to her hip, where it stopped.
“It’s beautiful,” Kinsley said.
He lifted his gaze to hers. “Your beauty is far more brilliant, my moonlight. You outshine even the brightest of stars in the night sky.”
Warmth filled Kinsley’s cheeks, and she smiled as she caressed his jaw. Turning his face into her touch, he kissed her palm, making her heart flutter.
“If I’m your moonlight, what are you to me?” she asked.
“I am your darkness. Your cloak, your protection. The shadow that shields you from the ravages of the day, the shroud that lulls you to sleep so you may wander in the bliss of your dreams.”
Tears prickled her eyes, and her chest constricted with swelling emotions. “Will you be waiting for me in my dreams?”
Eyes never leaving hers, Vex curled his fingers around the belly chain and drew her closer, brushing his lips just above her piercing. He settled his hands on her hips. “Awake or asleep, Kinsley, I am with you always.”
He’d offered those words with such vehemence, such solemnity, that they sounded like a vow, an oath, a binding promise. How could his words have been so meaningful after so short a while? She and Liam had been best friends for years before they’d married, and his vows… Well, they’d meant nothing in the end.
This should’ve been the same. Kinsley and Vex hardly knew one another, and the circumstances that had brought them together, that kept them together, were dire. He’d made his goal clear to her from the beginning.
But she believed him. Despite everything, she believed him with all her heart.
“Vex,” she said softly. It was the only thing she could say in that moment, even though there was so much she wanted to tell him.
He inhaled deeply and shuddered, his slitted pupils expanding as his hold on her hips tightened. Shadows coalesced behind him, solidifying into his batlike wings. “Ah, Kinsley… I can smell your desire.”
Before she could even consider a response, he grasped her ass and lifted her astride his stomach as he lay back on the bed, spreading his large wings to either side. Kinsley yelped, her eyes rounding and hair falling forward. She flattened her hands on his chest to catch herself.
“I must taste you in full,” he said. “Must drink of your essence.”
Kinsley gaped at him. “You…you what?”
He grinned, revealing those wicked, wicked fangs as his eyes dropped to her exposed sex. “If I must speak more plainly, I shall.” He dragged her farther up his chest, covering his skin in her slick. “I want my tongue in your cunt.”
Kinsley’s eyes widened.
Oh God.
“Wait, wait, wait!” She braced her hands on his shoulders, stopping his progress. “I… You… You want me to sit…” Cheeks blazing, she lifted her hands and covered her face. “I’ve never done that, Vex.”
Though she’d always carried some extra weight, it had never stopped her from doing the things she enjoyed. She loved her curves. But like any human being, she had moments of self-consciousness, of vulnerability, and this…this was one of those moments.
Vex took hold of her wrists and guided her arms down, pressing a kiss to each of her palms. “You’ve naught to fear from this. From me.”
Kinsley looked down at him. There was pure adoration in his eyes—adoration and yearning.
“I’m not scared of you,” she said. “I’m just…shy.”
He chuckled, the sound vibrating against her sex. “Cast out your hesitation, Kinsley. I offer only pleasure.” He slipped one of her fingers into his mouth and sucked, the tips of his tongue twirling around it as he slowly withdrew it. “I hunger for you. Thirst for you.”
Another aching pulse swept through Kinsley, followed closely by anticipation. Her heart was beating so fast that she wondered if it would sprout wings and fly away.
She nodded. “Okay.”
Vex growled, palmed her ass with both hands, and tugged her forward until her knees were on either side of his head. A shiver coursed through her when she felt his warm breath upon her slick, intimate flesh.
