Max seems to disregard her concerns, “Any broken bones?”
She shakes her head, “I don’t think so. The burns are my primary concern. A few of them appear infected. She needs IV antibiotics. Today. I can go get them and come back and start an IV drip.”
Max rises and shakes her hand, “Thank you. I’ll have your pay ready when you return.” He yells, “Bruno!”
His new beefy guard comes over, and Max tells him to let her out of the house and gate.
I arch an eyebrow at him, “New security?”
He sits back on the sofa with his whiskey and sips it, “Yeah. Until we get them, I want extra security on Savannah.”
“I’ll be back. I’m going to talk to Trevor.”
Walking outside, I find them outside at the pool, having a drink. Going over to the bar, I pour myself a drink with Trevor’s eyes on me the entire time. He thinks I don’t know he’s watching me, but I do. It’s fun to let him think I’m unaware.
I walk over to where they are sitting. His gaze travels my body with heat. I smile and sit on his lap, “Hey stalker.”
He grins, “Kitten.”
Trevor wraps his hand around my waist, pulls me against his chest, nearly spilling my drink, and I giggle.
He whispers in my ear, “Are you okay?”
I nod and take a sip of my drink, “I’m fine.”
“How is she?” Jade asks.
I sigh audibly, “Physically she’ll need surgery. She has some severe burns. Emotionally. I can’t figure it out. She acts mostly unaffected. So, I’m concerned about her suddenly snapping. Max is going to bring a therapist in.”
With unshed tears in her eyes, she asks, “When does it end? How do we erase all traffickers, so they won’t hurt more children?”
Hunter puts his arm around her and pulls her in close to him, “Sassy, it doesn’t end. For every ring erased another one pops up. If there are children, there will be traffickers.”
I want to say he’s wrong, but he isn't, and it's gut-wrenching. There’s nothing I want more than to eradicate this world of these disgusting parasites. But again, he’s not wrong.
“If you cut the head off this kind of snake another one will grow in its place. We’ll keep cutting their heads off and move on to the next.”
I kiss Trevor on the cheek, “I need to check on Savannah.”
When I walk back into the house, I hear voices. I step into the living room and find Max talking to Trevor’s sister, Jessica.
“Jessie!” I squeal as I run to her and wrap my arms around her. When my brother rescued me from a trafficking ring, it was Jessica who held me while I cried. It was she who taught me everything. How to cook, do laundry, and clean. Every mundane task that we all complain about. I didn’t know how to take care of myself. Jessie taught me so much and became a sister to me long before I realized she’d one day be my sister-in-law. She hugs me tight as I giggle.
“I’m so happy you’re here.”
Trevor comes in and smiles, “Hey brat.”
We pull apart, and she smirks at me, “I guess congratulations are in order. Although, you could do better.”
He walks closer to Jessica and pulls her in for a tight embrace. She moved to New York years ago when she knew her father and her other brother, Trevor's twin, were in some bad shit. Jessica is an angel. She is a social worker, but she’s rich, so she works for free. Most of her time is devoted to domestic violence shelters, but when she’s needed for trafficking work, she’s always here. My brother has attempted to pay her for her time more than once, but she refuses any compensation.
“Let’s go introduce you to Savannah before Dr. Cruise comes back.”
She nods and pulls away from Trevor.
“Can I come?” He asks.
I glance at him, “Sorry. Girls only right now. We’ll introduce you one at a time after she’s hydrated.”
