We all sit chatting about how much our lives have changed. Three glasses of water later, I have to pee, bad.
“I’ll be back. I have to use the restroom,” I say to Trevor.
He kisses me quickly, “I haven’t told you, but you look so fucking beautiful tonight.”
I stroke his cheek and whisper in his ear, “Thank you, husband. You look gorgeous yourself.”
I sway my hips a little more on the way to the bathroom because I know Trevor is watching every step I take. Walking into the restroom, I nearly run to the stall to relieve myself. After washing my hands, I go back out to get back to my family. I smile to myself, realizing that’s what they all are, even though Max is my only blood relative.
I’m lost in my happy thoughts when a hand grabs my arm, “Dance with me, beautiful.”
I look at the stranger. I don’t think I know him. He’s bald, taller than Trevor and Hunter, but not as tall as Max. I spot the teardrop tattoo under his brown eyes and roll my eyes, “Get your fucking hand off me.”
He doesn't, he squeezes tighter, “Don’t be a bitch. I just want a dance.”
“You have two seconds before I decide to stab you. And if I don’t my husband likely will.”
The stranger chuckles, “Oh Mia. If he cared about you, he’d never let you out of his sight.”
As if he were summoned, Trevor appears beside me, “I suggest you take your hands off my wife.”
The stranger laughs again, “She’s not your wife until tomorrow. Sad thing is she’ll never make it to the ceremony. See you tomorrow, Kitten.” He winks and makes a quick escape.
Max, Hunter, and Nash run after him, but Trevor takes me into his arms, “Are you okay?”
I press my face against his chest, “I’m fine.”
“Come sit, Kitten. They’ll call if they need us.”
We walk back to the table with Jade, Ivy, and Willow appearing stunned.
“Who was that?” Willow asks.
Trevor pulls me back onto his lap and says, “I’m guessing, James. He was the only one with a bald head in the picture. One of Joey’s employees.”
He holds me close, “You’re staying with me tonight, Mia. No argument please. I need to always know you’re safe.”
I sigh, “Okay.”
The truth is I don’t want to be away from Trevor. He’s my world. As much as I try to portray this woman of strength, sometimes I’m weak. During those times, he’s my only cure. Trev doesn’t judge me when I’m vulnerable. He loves me through it.
TREVOR
Mia sits on the chair beside me. Jade, Willow, and Ivy sit across from us. The entire table is quiet. If it weren’t for the music playing, you could hear a pin drop. My girl is struggling. I see her holding on by a thin thread. She looks at Willow, opens her mouth, and snaps it shut. After several minutes of silence, she finally speaks, “Willow, I’m sorry. I keep dragging Max into my bullshit. I don’t mean to. I’m sorry.”
Willow takes a swallow of her drink before setting it back on the table, “It’s not your fault. All these bad things that happen are not because of you. My husband is a protective man. There’s no way he won’t go after the bad guy threatening his sister.”
She stares down at her large diamond ring before looking back to Mia, “If he were that kind of man, he wouldn’t be Max. He’ll be fine. One man won’t be able to hurt the three of them. One man couldn’t take on my hulk of a husband even without Nash and Hunter.”
I snort at her hulk comment. It’s exactly what Max looks like without the green skin of course. I would’ve followed them if I thought they needed my help. They don’t. Every single one of us are skilled killers. We rarely truly need more than one person for the job. We work as a team because we want to. The man threatening my girl is a fucking dead man. That much, I know. No one threatens my wife and gets away with it.
My phone rings and flashes Max across the screen. I step outside of the restaurant, not because it’s obnoxiously loud, but because I want to be sure I hear everything he says.
“Hello?” I answer as I step out.
“I have a job for you.”
“Alright.”
