Throwing my phone down, I walk towards the large window that overlooks the back of the estate and see Kat and Xenia sitting by the pool. They’re giggling and smiling, with Xenia rubbing Kat’s belly and chatting merrily.

I wonder if she wants kids one day. I never thought to ask her that. If she does, then I won’t take that away from her, not even if she begged me.

Growing up as a human, I couldn’t wait to get married and start my own family, have a wife, a few kids, a large plot of land and live off what we farmed. Silly dreams I yearn for now.

I’ll speak with her about it later, for now, I can only dream.

XENIA

It’s a blistering day today and I find myself at the pool after 4 pm. Last night was somewhat therapeutic; clearing things up with Church and having a heart-to-heart with Kat about what’s going to happen next. Things feel better, and less strained and I actually feel lighter because of it.

They should be waking up soon, too.

The conversation Church and I had still sticks with me. It looks like he knows me better than I know myself and this is all from spending maybe a week or two with me. I have to admit that thinking about Entwining with him still scares me a bit, but he knew that before I even admitted it to myself.

Becoming a vampire is a scary as fuck thing, so unless it’s a life-or-death situation, I’d rather stay warm-blooded for now. But Church knew that too.

God, the man is perfect; while I’m over here, still indecisive about things.

I hear the roar of a vehicle in the distance and get to my feet; no one should be heading this way unless they’re a Devil’s Void member or Gabriel himself. They have not alerted us that either would come here, so who could this be?

Grabbing the dagger hidden in my boot, I walk to the front of the estate while still in my bathing suit, and spot a Jeep closing in on the mansion. A shiver runs up my spine as I recall these types of vehicles were the ones we used as hunters.

But I don’t recognize the driver as he approaches, and I have made it a hobby to memorize all the faces of our past allies. This man is blonde and lean, wearing sunglasses, and dressed in what looks like a white lab coat.

He brings the vehicle to a stop in front of me, then gives me a confused look, as if I’m the outsider.

“Can I help you?” I ask with the dagger clenched behind me.

He leans over his passenger seat, grabs something, and gets out of the Jeep. “Hi? Yeah, I’ve come to see Katherine?” he says, cocking his head towards the mansion, then holding up what looks like a cooler box. “I’ve brought these for her.”

“What’s inside there?” I ask, a bit confused while looking at the red and white cooler in his hand. “Who are you?”

“My name’s Matt. I’m a doctor back in town. I… uh… I help Katherine get the nourishment she needs,” he says while shaking the cooler. “If you know Katherine, you’ll know what I’m talking about.”

My hand loosens its grip on the dagger when I realize he must be the one supplying Kat with blood bags. He looks harmless enough, must be a human Kat used her mind thing on him to help her get the blood.

“How often do you come here to see her?”

He shrugs and takes a step closer to me. “Once a week. She should be on her last blood bag now,” he says, then looks up at the mansion. “Is she awake yet or has the baby made her more exhausted than before?”

“Ah, so it isn’t just recent?”

He shakes his head and sighs. “Afraid not; she’s been like this since I’ve come to do the drop-offs. There’s not much I can do but tell her to rest and keep herself nourished.”

I wonder if it's a normal Pureblood vampire thing for her to be this exhausted then. Priest better get his ass down here soon before something bad happens to her; I have a feeling that she needs something only he can give her. His blood.

“Well, she’s not awake yet, but will be soon. Want to join me out back for a drink while we wait?” I ask, knowing that I suck at the social thing, but knowing that he’s here to help Kat puts me more at ease.

“Sure, I’m off shift now anyway,” he says with a smile and I turn around, gesturing for him to follow me to the back.

We settled next to the pool with a beer in hand, and I let out a sigh. “So, how did you find Kat?” I ask, to which he chuckles.

“It’s more like she found me! My family has a longtime relationship with the Asa women of lore and when I saw her enter my practice looking as if she hadn’t fed in days, I knew what she was. It was only afterward that she told me she was pregnant. I never knew vampires could even fall pregnant!” He says, shaking his head and laughing.

Hmm, Kat must not have told him about the Pureblood thing, then.

“Ah, I see. She didn’t mention the person who’s been helping her all this time, so I wondered,” I say absentmindedly, standing up when I see movement in the window above the pool.
