He shrugged, feigning innocence. “Well, I had assumed you would want the first wedding here to be ours.”

“Ours?” she repeated, then understanding dawned. He watched as she moved from one emotion to another, first confusion, then happiness, and then wariness. She narrowed her eyes and pointed a finger at him. “Andrew Price,” she began, her tone a warning.

He grinned. “Sadie Connor.”

When he slipped the ring box out of his pocket, she gasped, a disbelieving smile growing on her sweet face.

“I had no idea when you walked into the library last spring what a kick in the pants you were about to give me.”

A laugh hiccuped out of her as tears welled up in her eyes.

“I also had no idea how badly I needed it. How badly I needed you.” He opened the ring box and offered it to her. “Will you marry me?”

She looked at the ring and bit her lip. “If I do, will you give me a promotion?” she asked.

“You know what?” he growled, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her into his lap as she erupted in giggles. She kissed him and nestled into his neck.

“Of course I’ll marry you,” she said with a contented sigh.

“Good.”

He took the ring out of the box and slipped it on her finger. When she turned her green eyes up to his, every last bit of chill was replaced by her warmth. She’d been wrong all those years ago. This was the game that mattered most, and there was no one he would rather share the victory with.
