I entwine our fingers and kiss her before she can further ask about the history of Wild Meadow Pack.
“Stop it.” She chuckles against my lips. “You are not playing fair.”
“You are not playing fair,” I retort. “By being so cute and beautiful and hot.”
Dalila snorts. “You are clearly delusional.”
“No, I’m just madly in love.”
“Goddess,” Henry groans. “It’s almost unbearable to drive with the both of you!”
“Jealous?” I ask, trying to sound sympathetic, like I pity him, well aware it will piss him off.
“Not at all!” he huffs. “Elodie and I don’t need to display our emotions all the time.”
“We don’t?” Elodie asks, her eyes wide.
Henry whips his head to the side, looking at her, terrified. The car wavers a bit.
“Fuck, Henry, eyes on the road!” I huff.
He winces and returns his attention back to the road. Elodie reaches out her hand, laying it on top of the one of his that is holding the wheel. “I was just teasing you,” she says softly.
Her touch calms him down. For years, Henry has had issues with OCD and SPD. His OCD gets triggered whenever he is stressed or feels guilty, while his SPD mostly comes to the surface when he feels overwhelmed by too much noise. He also tends to stay away from tight clothes. They make him feel claustrophobic.
For as long as I can remember, everyone always believed he was an ass because he didn’t want someone to touch him or because he got defensive in a big group of people. No one bothered to understand him. Elodie was the first, even before they were mates. Although she and Henry didn’t like each other at that time, she understood his issues as what they are.
Having our friends’ acceptance definitely helped him in dealing with everything.
Dalila snuggles against me now, smiling at me, and I can’t believe how responsive she is to me. For the first time in a long while, I feel truly cherished by the Goddess. “I have so much catching up to do,” she says.
“Don’t worry, you have plenty of time,” I reassure her.
“Are you already trying to wrap your mind around becoming luna?” Elodie asks and sounds impressed. “I know we will be joint lunas, but it’s not easy for me either.”
“I’m far from accepting it,” Dalila grins. “But I understand it’s the only way I can be with Tony. So sacrifices need to be made.” She pauses. “Honestly?”
Elodie nods.
“I know I have to, but I feel like I will suck as a luna,” she says. “I am… I’m just a human, and I don’t know anything about your world.”
“And you think this prevents you from being a good luna?” Elodie sounds amused. “Do you think I am luna material?”
“Yes.”
“The only thing that sets me apart from you is that I’m a lycan. Other than that, I don’t qualify for the job any more than you do. In fact, you are kind, gentle, and fun. You’re approachable. I’m not.”
Any way to stop our mates from shit-talking themselves?I link Henry, and I can even feel Lys grumbling a bit in annoyance.
You tell me,he grumbles. You are the smooth talker. Stop them!
Before I can retort anything, Dalila has answered already. “That’s because people don’t know you,” she says to Elodie. “You have been so helpful to me, you always notice everything going on around you, and you help without being prompted to. Plus, you are very smart.”
“The same goes for you,” Elodie says. “You are very approachable. There is something warm about you and the fact that you so easily accepted our world, and Tony, honestly, that’s a major mindfuck, for all of us. I know everyone is impressed.”
“I know my opinion doesn’t matter,” I say, “But I think you are both impressive women. Dalila, you are a little genius, finishing your studies far before your peers. And Elo is right. The pack is immensely impressed by you.”
“And you, Elodie,” Henry continues. “Prince Eric hired you when you were only sixteen, and you became a full member of the Council at seventeen. Never before did that happen. You are also very attentive and catch on faster than anyone else I know.”
