“Of course,” I promise.
Deacon takes the basket from me and follows my mother out of the pack house while I make my way upstairs to my office. Tony and I have separate offices. I think we’d kill each other otherwise. Tony likes what he calls organized chaos, while I prefer organization without chaos. The meeting Tony ditched on me is online, so I open my notebook, log in, and wait for it to start. It’s with our allies on finances and joint projects. It’s not too difficult, and looking at it now, I’m glad I made that deal with Tony.
When we approach the end of the meeting, Tony appears in my office, sitting down in one of the chairs and listening to the rest of the meeting. He looks at me, and I give him the thumbs up. Once I bid goodbye to the fellow alphas, I log off and turn my attention back to him.
“It went well?” he asks.
“Yes.” I nod. “Did you get your tickets?”
“I did.” He looks a bit bashful. “Thanks, Henry.”
I snort. “I will never understand your hobbies, but I’m glad you have something you enjoy.”
He smiles. “So, I’m here now. Let’s go through the schedules for next week. Dad told me he wants us to do them from now on.”
I groan a bit. Dad is handing more and more tasks to us to prepare us for when we take over. It’s great to learn things, but we have to attend college too. We are both studying business; Tony’s learning the more practical side, including marketing, work ethics, and human resources, while I focus on accounting and finances. He is better at social affairs, as he is the smoother talker, while I’m better at math.
“Let’s do it now.” Tony pulls me out of my thoughts. “So that we’ll be in time for the girls’ birthday party. Plus, I can’t believe I’m saying that……I need to study tomorrow. I have an exam coming up.”
I nod. “Good to see you putting effort into your studies.”
Tony laughs. “You act as if you were the most dedicated student all along.”
“You’re right,” I admit. I wasn’t always eager to study, though I’m a fast learner.
We go through the schedules of the warriors and guards for the upcoming week. Eventually, Dad joins us to help us, as it’s the first time we’re doing it. He points out what we need to watch out for, like pregnancies, warriors who are visiting college or have another conflicting schedule, those who just met their mates or are injured. He also shows us how to monitor warriors who don’t click well and not put them together for important tasks.
“Thanks, Dad.” Tony looks at the schedule and nods. “We’ve learned a lot from this.”
Dad beams in pride, his eyes glinting in joy. Deep inside, he is a laid-back and fun guy. He was pretty strict with us during our rebellious phase. Well, can’t really blame him. “I’m so happy my sons finally came around and are showing some responsibility.” He laughs loudly and smacks my shoulder. “Finally, I can boast about you in front of my friends as well.”
“Didn’t give you a lot to boast about before,” I conclude.
Dad turns earnest. “I was always proud to be your father,” he says to us. “You just went through a phase, but I knew the whole time that you are capable future alphas.”
Before Tony and I can answer, the door bursts open, and Deacon comes in. “Jace.” He glares at my father. “I don’t find it funny.”
“What?” Dad snorts. “Don’t be so dramatic, Deacon. What happened?”
“You want me to believe it’s a coincidence that you only let me go to business meetings where I have to meet women?” He frowns.
Dad looks completely unfazed by his outburst. He stands up and squeezes Deacon’s shoulder. “My friend, you have been getting on my nerves ever since Janice fell pregnant. It’s almost like I’m pregnant, too. I love you, but I definitely don’t need you to dote on me. So, I decided to distract you.”
“I’m not doting on you,” Deacon argues.
“Yesterday for lunch, you offered to cut Janice’s steak and then tried to force a green smoothie on me.”
“For your health,” Deacon points out.
“I’m not drinking anything that looks like someone threw up in it.” Dad grins. “So……I decided you need to get laid!”
Deacon frowns while Tony and I can barely contain our amusement. Dad turns to wink at us before he tugs his fuming beta along to discuss this issue further.
Tony finally bursts into laughter. “I can’t believe it.” He grins. “Dad is a force to be reckoned with.”
I nod. “He really is.”
“When are we leaving tonight?” Tony asks. “Driving together?”
