“That’s freaky,” Serenade mutters.

“Yeah.” I frown. “Let’s go and check on my father and Beta Deacon.” I turn to look at Marcel. “How about you return to your mate and the others to see if everything is alright.”

He nods and, without further ado, hurries away. I link my dad, who tells me he is trying to block the windows and make sure the rain won’t come into the pack house. Serenade and I run to meet with him and help.

“The other houses on the pack grounds?” I ask breathlessly once we reach the warriors and my father.

“Deacon and a team of warriors made sure to secure them,” he mutters. “We’re just preparing for the worst. Some houses are out amidst the forest, and I had a bunch of warriors secure the trees there.”

“We should evacuate everyone to the pack house,” I point out. “Just to be safe.”

“Your brother had the same idea.” Dad nods. “He’s on it.”

“The infirmary?” I ask.

“That’s the first we secured. I’ve got a bunch of guards there to act fast in case something happens.” He pauses. “The dungeons are safe, too. I don’t need someone to escape from there, but I also don’t need a flood wave to drown anyone down there.”

I nod, about to ask where I can help when one of the guards comes running towards us. He is dripping wet. “Alpha Jace,” he blurts out. “Young Alpha Anthony.”

“What happened!?” Dad asks, alarmed.

“There is a car out there, halfway to the pack house. It’s no one from our pack. I think they lost their way. A human is in the car.”

“In this weather?” I ask, horrified. It happens that humans step onto our pack grounds, naturally so, when they go hiking. Normally, the signs of “Beware of Bears” and “Natural Habitat of Wolves” and the like make them wary and avoid our areas, but it does happen occasionally.

They never drive through our pack lands, though. Our roads are marked as private property. The person probably didn’t see it through the rain.

I exchange a gaze with my father. He nods encouragingly at me.

“Let’s go,” I order. “We can’t leave them out of there.”

The Human

*ANTHONY*

Ilinkafewwarriors and Serenade to follow me before I have the guard who alerted us lead me to the road the car is stuck at. There is no use in taking a car ourselves, so we just have to run, and unfortunately, we can’t shift either… a human on pack grounds always means a certain risk to be discovered.

It’s normally warranting what we call code red. Namely, keep the pack and our identity safe.

“Is it far?” Serenade yells.

“No,” the guard calls through the rain.

“Then we aren’t going to make it back until the core of the thunderstorm or monsoon or whatever the fuck that is reaches us,” she says.

I nod. It’s fucking cold. The air is almost freezing, yet instead of snow, we get this crazy monsoon, something that only occurs in summer here. Even then, it’s a type of weather that’s very rare in this area.

I have no time to think about how weird all of this is, my mind and instincts taking over and pushing me into emergency mode. We need to be fast and effective to save the human and make it back to the pack house. Everything else we can discuss there.

“There it is!” The guard is still running, leading us up a hill, and pointing at a red car, clearly stuck in the mud. Some of these roads aren’t made for a normal car, and this path, in particular, we only take with trucks during normal weather.

I pick up my pace, running past Serenade and the guard, and approach the car fast. As I run closer, I can smell the hint of roasted almonds. It makes me stop in my tracks for a moment. What… no… what… it can’t…

Roasted… almonds and cocoa.

Lys stirs in my mind, but I ignore him for now. My first intuition is to run. To turn around and just run away. Hide somewhere and only come out again when it’s all over and she’s left again and not to have history repeat itself. I want to run away so badly, but I can’t. I just can’t.
