“What else did you see?” Alpha Elden inquiries.

“Before I was forced to leave her mind, there was a presence… a voice that told me to return. I think it was the same that reminded me it was all in my head. She looked weird though… as if she was half cat and half human.”

“What do you mean?” Anthony asks, confused.

“She had the body of a human and the head of a cat,” I shrug.

“Bastet,” Henry mutters.

“Excuse me.” Alpha Jace blinks.

“The goddess Bastet has a cat’s head and a human’s body.”

I stare at him in both shock and surprise. Bastet is not just a lesser deity. She is an actual goddess.

“Bastet is our goddess,” Cassiopeia whispers. “The equivalent of your Moon Goddess. She is…” A pause. “But how?”

Everyone looks at her in shock, not able to answer her question. How was the goddess of the werecats connected to these weird happenings? And why did she reach out to me?

OnceArmanmentionshesaw a figure that resembles Bastet, I truly feel the gravity of the situation for the first time. Up until now, we were just researching a mystery, but now we almost lost Arman in this woman’s mind… and he was able to interact with her cat spirit… but also with an unknown deity, or whatever it was he saw there.

And then Bastet intervenes, in person?

Uncle Elden is the fastest to recover. “We’ll have your aunt transferred here immediately, Princess Cassiopeia.” He pauses. “As a fellow leader, I know how hard it is to make such a decision, but I would advise you to really think about my offer to have your pride relocated, even if temporarily.”

Cassiopeia’s strong stance seems to be rattled by shock now. Knowing that Bastet is involved probably shook her for real.

It would shock me to the core, too, to find out that our goddess would be involved.

“I will seriously consider it,” she says earnestly. “Thank you for your generosity, Alpha Elden and Luna Flora.”

Her words seem to finally wake Aunt Flora up from whatever trance she was in. She is a peculiar being, looking like a teen while she is probably in her fifties. I’m not sure how old she is, but she has adult children, for fuck’s sake. She has to be at least in her late forties. There is always something ethereal around her, something you can’t quite grasp, like she lives in her own world occasionally.

Now she jumps up, walks towards Cassiopeia, and twirls around in front of her. “You should stay with us too, sweetheart.” She takes Cassiopeia’s hand in her hands. “We would have so much fun.” She beams. “You’re so beautiful.”

Cassiopeia seems to be completely spellbound by Flora being Flora. “I…”

“It’s been so long since I met a werecat.” Flora smiles brightly. “And you’re a jaguar on top of that. That’s so rare!”

“How did you know?” Cassiopeia blinks, turning to look at us.

I just shake my head. None of us told Flora, but Flora has a habit of knowing… things.

“Oh, I just took a guess.” She giggles. “So, you and your aunt should come to stay here.” Flora twists her long braid between her fingers. “And the others should probably make sure not to be in the same place.”

She always does that, I think, saying the weirdest things and then throwing something serious in between, almost like she is doing it on purpose.

“Flora is right,” Dad points out, amazing me once again at how easily he can make out what she truly wanted to say. He, Aunt Flora, and Uncle Elden have been friends ever since they were children, so I assume he just learned. “I think we should cover all our bases and make sure not to have everyone in the same place.”

“It’s certainly safer that way,” Uncle Elden agrees. “We will have Auset transferred here within the next two hours. And if you like Cassiopeia, you can stay here, too.”

She nods with a smile, her smile growing a bit, when Flora takes her hand again and squeezes it as if all the cold just left her body. “Thank you. I will take you up on your offer then.”
