The person stares at me, their eyes boring into mine. Then they lift a finger, pointing in the direction opposite of where I came from. I turn my head back to look at them, but the person has returned to their involuntary slumber.
There is no use in remaining here, so I get up and walk towards the direction they nudged me in until I reach a door. Opening it, I step outside into a beautiful oasis. The desert is surrounding it, making it even more magical. This time, there is no woman or spirit chained or bound somewhere but a beautiful silver-white lynx waiting for me. The beautiful creature comes closer to me now, looking at me through its huge, expressive eyes.
“You’re Auset’s lynx spirit?” I ask softly.
The lynx tilts its head. I can feel her trying to push through my mind to establish a link, but it doesn’t work. Frustrated, the lynx hisses and growls before turning away from me and padding into the depths of the oasis. I follow her, curious as to what she wants to show me. She leads me to yet another door, sitting down next to it and looking at me insistently.
“I will make sure to free you and Auset,” I tell her. “And undo whatever happened to you.”
The lynx gets up again, nudging its head against my legs and circling me.
“What do you want to tell me?”
She paces up and down in front of me, never letting her gaze stray from mine. She runs towards the edge of the oasis, but an unknown force seems to push her back.
“You can’t leave,” I conclude.
The lynx nods at me.
“Does that mean… Do I need to find a way to set you free first?” I ask.
She almost jumps in excitement at my words.
I nod. “I will find a way,” I promise her.
For a moment, it looks like she nods at me before she disappears into the thicket again.
I take a deep breath, open the door the lynx showed me, and step through it. This time, I stumble right into a forest. I’m confused at first about the change of scenery. This looks like home, like any forest around Moon Blood or one of our nearby packs.
Noises come from the side, and I jump a little as I see the same white lynx from before running towards me. She doesn’t notice me though, and runs right through me.
It seems like this time, I landed in an actual memory of Auset, which is even more confusing as I wonder what I saw before. The few times I used my gift, I always ended in a memory of a person. However, If the pyramid and oasis weren’t a memory, what were they then?
I shove these thoughts aside for later and follow the white lynx to a clearing, where she shifts to Auset. Men and women equipped with crossbows surround her. Auset keeps up the fight like the strong warrior she probably is. She doesn’t succumb even when they shoot at her several times. Eventually, her body gives in. Before she does, though, I can see her closing her eyes, momentarily switching her presence with her lynx, and then it feels like a presence leaves her, a shadow almost. It looks like her… lynx.
What… how did she do that?
She set her cat spirit free from her body and probably locked it into the safety of her mind! I’ve never heard of a shifter being able to do that.
Then Auset passes out.
A man enters the clearing. He is wearing a cloak, too, but his face is without a mask. It’s covered in scars, though, and his eyes glint red. “That’s too much,” he screams at the other men and women. “You used too many tranquilizers on her. She might never wake up from it.”
I step closer, aware they can’t see me in this memory, to get a closer look at the men and women and their leader. All of them seem to wear the same tattoo.
“Pack your things,” he hisses. “Her people are coming!”
“Should we take her with us?” one man asks.
“No, we leave her here,” he huffs. “They will find a way to undo the damage and heal her. We need her alive. Once she wakes up again, weakened, we will catch her.”
They need her alive?
I frown. They went to such lengths to attack her, just to leave her behind so others could save her life. It means she is of great value to them. The memory gets blurry again, slowly pushing me away.
Before I can pass out completely, though, I can hear it again.I will wait for your return.
I force my eyes open and look into the yellow eyes of a being I have never seen before. Is it a human or a cat? She smiles shortly, grabbing me and pushing me away from her. My head is spinning as I feel how an invisible force drags me away.
