Henry glares at him while Elise and Elodie grin.

I ignore their little argument and stride directly towards the nurses’ room, where some nurses are gathered to go through their paperwork. We just realized that the room Jade wrote down for us is in a secluded area of the hospital, one we can’t just invade like that.

“Hello, excuse me.” I stumble a bit, gripping onto the table, and pretend to be completely flustered by being clumsy.

I’ve decided to go for the adorable klutz image today. One of the older nurses is at my side immediately. “Did you get hurt?” she asks in worry.

I rub over my head in embarrassment. “No,” I mutter. “I’m so sorry. I think I got lost.”

The lost pup approach seems to work on the elderly nurse who had approached me. “This happens a lot,” she reassures me.

“My mom told me to drop by one of her friends,” I tell her with what I hope are my best puppy eyes. They normally work on everyone except for Dad and Mom. Mom is particularly immune to them, while I did get Dad the one or other time with that approach. “She is so busy currently. I wanted to help her out.”

“Oh, hun.” The nurse smiles. “Where do you need to go?”

I diligently tell her the room number I’m looking for. When she eyes me in surprise, I work my puppy eyes on her again. This time, I decide to use my gift, just to be on the safe side, allowing a bigger amount of pheromones to seep through, just enough to give her the last nudge.

I don’t want her to fall for me.

And that approach I certainly don’t try with my parents. I did it once to get my way, and I swear, while my father is normally not capable of raising his hands at us, this one time, only Mom was able to stop him from actually disciplining me THAT way.

Ugh.

It was scary enough not to try again, ever.

It works on the nurse, though, and soon, I find myself trailing behind her, chatting with her a bit and telling her a bit about my mom and how she tries to come regularly. I try to keep her mind off the corridor we’re walking through or rather off the people who are not so subtly following us, aka my friends, who are definitely anything but discreet.

The nurse seems to be pleased by what I tell her. “Your mother is a commendable woman, my dear,” she tells me. “To come here and talk to a comatose patient regularly… we wish more people would do that.”

Comatose?

Did you hear that?I link Henry.

Loud and clear,he mutters. You’re doing a great job, Tony, continue.

Praise coming from Henry is rare, and it makes me smile a bit. To not raise any suspicions, I continue to skillfully manipulate the nurse into giving me more information. By the time we are at her room, I know that the woman in there is slightly older, probably around fifty. She came here two weeks ago, and no one knows what happened.

A young woman visits her daily; it has to be the one Elodie saw. The werecat. Now that we are so close, I can take up a new scent, too. It’s covered by all the antiseptics and disinfectants, but I can sense a shifter nearby, actually two of them.

My little troupe of chaos friends scurries into a small storage room to hide while the nurse leaves me at my spot and returns to her office. Then, they slowly approach me. “Do they have cameras here?” Elise whispers.

“No, just at the front door, and we walked around that thanks to the nurse Tony seduced,” Marcel points out.

“I didn’t seduce her,” I tell him. This is something I’m always adamant to clarify. I would hate for people to think I actually seduce women with my power. I would never do such a thing. Either she wants me, or she doesn’t. Seducing her with my gift would be like drugging her. And that’s a no-go.

“Oh, I didn’t mean it in a bad way,” Marcel reassures me. “But you did something…”

“I made her lower her walls if you want to call it that,” I explain. “To make her less guarded around me and fall for my little silly pretense.”

Before any of us can say anything else, the door opens slightly, and a beautiful woman peeks outside. She is tall and regal, and her skin is a bit darker than ours. She resembles Arman a bit. Elodie was right; she is clearly a shifter. She might not smell like a wolf, but there is a second presence to her.

She looks at us now, her brows furrowed and her expression guarded. “Are you here to attack?”

“No.” Elise makes sure to push past us and approaches her. There is a gentle smile on her lips as she looks at the unknown woman. “It might sound weird, but a witch has led us here. We’re researching some mysterious phenomena.”

I’m a bit wary of her giving away so much information, but decide to go with her gut feeling. To my surprise, the eyes of the woman widen. “Jade?” she whispers, a hint of hope in her eyes. “Did she send you?”

“Yes.” I take a step closer, too, now. “We just went to visit her coven today, and she told us to come here.”
