“Not really,” I admit. “So, what’s the plan?”
“Jace will hand them over a lot of things,” she says. “And once they are done with college, which will hopefully be soon, they can take over as alphas.”
Hearing her words makes me realize how soon this is going to be. We are approaching summer, and Tony and Henry will start their second year in college soon. Henry is very smart and a fast learner, he will definitely graduate earlier than expected, and Tony shows a lot of motivation and ambition now. I wouldn’t hold it past him not to finish earlier either. “It’s going to be in one to two years,” I say while calculating the probability of them finishing their BA degrees.
“Yes,” Janice says. “The original plan was to let them finish college and then slowly have them take over, but with how things are now… I think it makes the most sense to have them become alphas sooner. They might not be fully ready, but they will grow into it. And you will have four people to lead, after all.” She takes my hand. “Don’t be scared, Dalila. Don’t forget you can split the work with Elodie, and I’m going to help you as long as you need me.”
“Well, one year is still plenty of time,” I say bravely.
Janice chuckles. “I see Tony’s optimism already rubbed off on you.”
“It’s a great trait occasionally,” I say. “To him, the glass is always half full. Well, aside from the times…” I don’t end my sentence. Janice knows what I’m talking about, anyway. The times when he lost his first mate. But he is slowly becoming more and more himself. Granted, I don’t know the Tony from before Corinne, but seeing how his family and friends react to him, it seems this is how he truly is.
“You changed him,” Janice tells me. “Wait, not really, change. But you made him work on himself and helped him learn to open up. Henry is the more direct one of them, and his gift is very useful in battle. In a way Tony always thought he is less of a leader than Henry. You proved to him that he can be a leader, and that him being different is not a disadvantage.”
I shake my head. “You make it sound like I’m special, when in fact it was Tony who made me realize it’s okay to be the way I am.”
“Isn’t this how it’s supposed to be?” she asks.
“You are right, maybe—” My words get stuck in my throat when I realize she is clasping her stomach. “Janice, is everything alright?”
She groans. “It’s just…” Her eyes widen. “It’s two weeks too early!”
“Oh my god!” I jump up to my feet, running towards her. “Do you need something?” When she doesn’t answer and instead gasps for air, I do the only thing I can think of and try to link the doctor. Unfortunately I still suck at mind linking and realize I’ve linked the whole pack once I hear all the buzzing and voices in my head.
Oh, oopsie.
Well, at least they know now.
“The contractions are coming fast,” Janice mutters.
“Come, I’ll help you and take you to the infirmary!” I help her up and carefully start to lead her towards the door.
We don’t get far before the door bursts open, and Jace basically runs into the room like he is possessed. “Janice,” he blurts out.
“Everything is alright,” she says with a small smile. “It’s just happening faster than expected.”
He easily swipes her into his arms. Seeing them like this makes me swoon. I never thought I’d be one for these strong, possessive men, but it’s so cute how gentle he is with her and how he carries her to the infirmary.
“Dalila.” Janice turns her head to me. “Please call my boys, will you?”
I’m actually feeling relieved that I can do something. “Absolutely! Consider it done!”
*HENRY*
I’m in the middle of a presentation for my business class when the door bursts open, and my brother comes in. “I tried to call you ten times,” he says without acknowledging anyone. “We need to go.”
I stare at him and then at my professor.
“Mom just went into labor!” he blurts out.And you had a fucking mind block up, so no one could link you!
“WHAT?” I exclaim and almost drop my papers.
The professor’s face lights up with a smile. “Then you are obviously excused, Mr. Hearst. You were almost finished anyway.”
I don’t need to wait for more approval. My group can do the rest on their own. I grab my bag and then run after Tony. “Elodie took the car,” I tell him.
“We can take mine!” he says as we chase down the alley towards the parking space for students. I scramble into the car while Tony is already starting the engine.
