Rage fills me as I notice he is about to destroy my mate, to kill him. A deity isn’t supposed to directly intervene with humans and their fate!
“STOP IT!” I yell as I run forward. The surprise working in my favor as everyone stops in their tracks. And even up in the air, I can notice how Tony’s eyes widen in horror at seeing me, pain and fear flashing over his face like when I saw him through the camera, punching the floor.
Let me out,Maahes says, and part of me wants to fight him, mainly because I’m pissed beyond the moon that someone attacked my mate! I want to be the one to kick the snake’s ass!Your anger is my advantage now,Maahes reminds me.I won’t let him hurt your mate.
I take a deep breath, willing my anger down and allowing Maahes to come forward. It’s weird, never in my life have I encountered this feeling before. I’m still in my body, my conscious is still there, but someone else makes the decisions now. Maahes has overtaken my body like our contract says he can. It’s a mutual give and take.
“Apophis,” he says, and I’m shocked by how my voice sounds when he says it. It’s darker and more dangerous. “Let the boy down!”
“You are here at last,” Apophis hisses, and indeed lets go of Anthony. To my relief Arman and Henry manage to catch him. He groans in pain and holds his arm to his chest, yet all he seems to focus on is me.
“You are not Dalila,” he mutters. “Or are you?”
I’m shocked I can understand him through all of the noise and over the distance, but I assume it’s thanks to Maahes being in control.I am,I say.But right now, I am not.
Apophis stares at Maahes and me spitefully. “Found another gatekeeper,” he sneers while morphing into his human form. “Pity you don’t have a form in the human realm anymore ever since I took it from you. You can only use your poor little vessels. But they are so weak and breakable.”
“Can you really not recognize her?” Maahes asks calmly.
“She is just a human girl,” Apophis huffs.
“She is Nephthys’ daughter and by blood connected to Bastet and Isis,” Maahes tells him. “Born out of a great sacrifice. Her whole presence is holy. It makes me stronger than ever.” I can feel his strength seeping through my body before he shifts to his lion, his companion, and at the same time, a manifestation of himself.
I couldn’t do that before. Ever since Apophis destroyed my human form, I’ve been bound to a human vessel,he tells me with a smirk as he lunges towards Apophis. But with you, everything changes. This feels good.
Glad one of us enjoys themselves,I say.
You mean to say you aren’t enjoying seeing everything through the lion’s eyes?
I feel flustered at his words, mainly because he is right. The world around me is so sharp, and I can zoom in on even distant objects, and I see Tony so clearly even though I’m still pretty far away from him. His former expression of fear and terror is replaced by one of surprise and pride now.
My gaze gets drawn away from him as Maahes pushes me back and takes full control, lunging at Apophis in his lion form.
*ANTHONY*
I can only sit there and stare at the picture in front of me. My mate appeared out of nowhere, reminding me of the horrors of the nightmare Apophis made me see, before she started to glow and her eyes turned white.
Maahes is with her, but how?
I can feel her so much stronger now,Lys says, equally dumbfounded. The deity is connected to her.
My blood freezes shortly. What does this mean?
I don’t know, just that he is here with her now, like I am with you.
Instead of a cat spirit, she has a deity now? I shake my head, though Auset comes to my mind and how eagerly she wanted to talk to my mate. There is no time for questions, though, as Maahes has taken over Dalila’s body and shifts to his majestic lion, a massive and regal beast that easily towers over us.
Apophis seems shocked at first before shifting back to his serpent form and countering Maahes’ attack. The pain from my broken arm is momentarily forgotten as some of his cultists come running towards us. Even now, they still want to fight for him. I take a wild guess that they don’t truly care for Apophis. They just want power and were stupid enough to believe that a deity would give them theirs, just like that.
All around me, my friends shift to their wolves.
Lys?
This will hurt like hell, Tony. Your arm is broken.
I don’t care,I say.
Without questioning me further, he lets me shift to his form, my bones cracking and my broken hand twisting and breaking once more. I want to scream in pain but try to keep my groans and screams inside.
