“Again, it’s just assumptions,” I admit.

“We believe Leila’s and Arman’s mother was my cousin. Actually, I’m sure about it. My lycan feels the relation to them,” Elden explains. He squeezes my shoulder. “Which means this guy here is a relative and someone I can push around a bit.”

I smile. “That’s your logic?”

“Perfectly logical. All those old alphas are pushy.” Another voice joins us, and to my surprise, I can see Prince Eric coming closer. His beta is driving him, and the car is packed with their bags. It seems he is about to return to Paris.

“This one”—Elden gestures towards Eric—“I wish I could put straight sometimes. But my strategies aren’t working on him.”

I look at Eric. “You need to tell me your secret.”

Eric laughs. “Ignorance is my secret.” Again, everyone laughs, then Eric brings forward a little syringe. “And brilliance.”

“You did it!?” Elodie exclaims.

Eric places the item in my hand. “It’s the antidote.” He smiles. “Whatever has put Auset’s mind in a coma, this here should wake her up again, or at least the deity inside her.” Eric wraps my fingers around the item. “Leila told me about your gift and how difficult it is. I think it’s a kickass gift, but I don’t envy you for it. I know these gifts come with a price, and yours is even more difficult to master. But I have heard that even Nephthys in person believes you can do it.”

Something about his words and how he says them puts my mind at ease. I don’t know how he does it, but I just feel a bit lighter… like life is a bit easier. Is this why Leila likes to stay in Paris with Eric and his mate? Because they give her the feeling of being able to accomplish everything?

“Well,” I say. “Then all I have to do is to wake up the deity. Let’s do it!”

“You are ready?” Elden wants to know.

“Yes.”

“Good.” He nods. “I will call Harmony to come over. I want her as your safety net again.”

Accepting help isn’t weakness. It isn’t weakness. “Yes, please. I’d like that.”

We do it the same as last time. There is a thread tying our little fingers to each other, and Harmony has her arms wrapped around me. My excitement to dive back into Auset’s mind is tempered… it’s one thing to free her lynx, but another to free the deity inside her.

But Eric is right. Nephthys—an actual deity—told us it was what I had to do and our only chance. Who am I to doubt her?

I keep my fingers wrapped around the syringe in my pocket, giving a curt nod towards Elden before my eyes gaze over the lynx who is still waiting at Auset’s bed for her to wake up. Lapis looks at me, a hopeful look in her eyes. I nod at her, closing my eyes and diving into Auset’s mind again.

I’m greeted by the usual sight.

Human,Khaldun grumbles.Let us wake that deity up and then never return!

Before I can even set a step in the right direction, a purr can be heard. I suppress an eye roll. I might be bold sometimes, but not bold enough to insult an actual goddess. I turn my head to the black cat. “Bastet,” I greet her politely. “It’s my pleasure.”

The cat tilts her head, and I could swear she grins slightly. Cats are fucking creepy anyways, and this experience makes it even worse. She steps closer to me and with a sigh I accept my fate. I lift her up, avoiding any eye contact; I want to keep my eyes by any means. But instead of remaining in my arms she jumps onto my shoulder and drapes herself around my neck.

Now, that’s not a particularly comfortable position either.

My fingers move into my pocket again, feeling the syringe. “How is that even possible?” I mutter. How can I carry something from the real world into the dream world?

It’s enchanted, you dumbass.I can hear Bastet’s voice in my mind.

I decide not to engage with her or answer her insult, although Khaldun throws invisible daggers at her in my mind.

“Good,” I say instead. “The plan is to go back to that chamber.”

Bastet raises her head in interest.Interesting, she says.

She doesn’t seem against it, so I decide it’s a good sign. My eyes glide shortly towards the direction where I saved Lapis, but to my surprise, there is just fog surrounding the area.

Don’t waste your time,Bastet says.Ignore it.
