ThisisbeyondanythingI could have ever imagined. I can usually see my lycan in my mind. We can interact, but we can’t be at the same place at the same time. It’s impossible! Yet it is very real now. I can see Arlo rushing towards Henry and jumping at him, excited to see him.
Henry touches his fur, beaming in joy like he is a little boy again. “My wolf.” Henry smiles. “Arlo!”
“My human,” Arlo growls, sounding equally joyful.
This is real.
Lys comes closer too, shyly, just eyeing me carefully. He stops a few steps in front of me and tilts his head. I stare at him, not able to look anywhere else. Something in my heart hurts more than it ever did before. It was different when I could shove him aside, but now that I see him here…
Lys takes a step towards me, but before he can reach me, Arlo hits him from the side, making him skid slightly and drop to his back. Lysander jumps up his feet, his eyes dark. “What was that!?”
“Are you kidding?” Arlo growls. “Is it true you remained hidden for weeks!?”
“With the mate bond breaking, I didn’t know how to react.” Lysanders goes into a stance to attack. Meanwhile, Henry and I watch our two lycans, completely dumbfounded, as they lunge at each other.
Lys bites down on Arlo’s shoulder while Arlo throws himself on his back to get rid of his brother. Soon, the tables turn, and Arlo bites into Lys’ hind quarter, making my lycan growl and hiss.
They both jump apart momentarily.
“That’s your excuse!? What if your human suffered from depression or fucking killed himself!?” Arlo’s voice is dark and threatening. “We are one entity!”
“How about you try to live with your mate dying in front of your eyes,” Lys hisses.
In a way, he is right. There is nothing that quite compares to when your mate bond is ripped apart by death. I didn’t know Corinne. I only saw her once, yet the bond was already working on us.
“That’s not an excuse,” Arlo huffs.
“How would you know anything about it? Your life so far has been pretty easy.” Lys circles him, his eyes narrowed. “It’s not like you even cared and—”
“Enough,” a voice roars.
All four of us turn around to see a third lycan approaching us. He is fucking massive as he trots towards Elden, just to halt next to him. It’s been a long time since I saw Regis up front. I completely forgot how majestic he is. It’s truly the king of lycans.
Regis raises to full height, narrowing his eyes to a glare. “Are you done with your petty fight now!?” he bellows at Arlo and Lysander.
They both look at him cautiously before lowering their heads.
“First of all,” Regis growls while Elden leaves his side and joins us. “You are brothers! Treat each other as such!”
I toss a glance at Elden. He just shrugs. “Regis has it under control. He has dealt with six pups. Believe me, he knows what he is doing.”
Our lycans pay no attention to us, too focused on Regis’ threatening aura. “Anything you have to say in your defense!?”
“He started it,” Lys grumbles.
I roll my eyes. Typical of my childish wolf. Regis furrows his brows. “He did, but you were a horrible counterpart to your human! Arlo is right. We are one entity, and respect goes both ways. That’s not how we treat the other half of our shared soul. Of course, he is cross with you.” He shifts his head to glare at Arlo. “But your brother is right too… you don’t know how it feels to have the mate bond rip, and you certainly didn’t pay attention enough to him. How come it took you weeks to figure out your brother was unresponsive?”
Arlo lets his ears hang down. “I was so preoccupied with other things.”
“So, who are you to judge?” Regis frowns before turning to Lysander. “You better find a way to make up with your human! And if you ever leave him again, I will be the one to bite your ass, not your brother.”
He turns away and towards Elden. “I’m done here. Good talk.” He pauses. “Can we return to our mate now?”
Elden snorts. “We are almost there, I promise.”
Regis grunts a bit but abides by Elden’s wishes. He sits down a bit further away from us while he lets us deal with the mess.
“You know,” Henry starts. “Regis is right. Arlo and I should have noticed something was off, but we didn’t.”
