I blink at him. First, I feel confused, but eventually, I can feel the fog lifting as realization settles in. “No way,” I mutter.

He nods, brushing through his hair. He wears it shorter than I do, and it suits his slightly scruffy personality pretty well.

My mouth drops open. So, that’s why he was in such a mood recently. He probably had a feeling they were mates, but now he is scared she will reject him.

I grab him by his shoulders, shoving him out of the door. “Go out there now,” I tell him seriously. “And talk to her.”

“Tony—”

“No, don’t waste any time,” I urge him. “You don’t know how she will react. She doesn’t hate you, Henry. Maybe at first, she did, but over the last few months when we were on the mission, she saw more of you than the arrogant, angry pretense you put up. She is a smart woman, Henry. Give her a chance, and furthermore, give yourself a chance.”

He takes a deep breath. “You’re right. Thanks, Tony.”

I smile. “Anytime.”

Mates

*HENRY*

Fuck, what’swrongwithTony? Most of the time he is happy and laid-back, but recently, I can feel some weird vibes through the bond. It’s like something tones them down, though, and I’m not sure if they are truly there or if I just imagine things.

I thought if I told him about my mate he would open up, but instead, it suddenly was all about me, and I found myself lost in his words of encouragement.

This is so weird, Arlo,I link my wolf.

He sighs. When he is ready, I’m sure he will talk to you.

When will he be ready, though?I huff, angling for my phone and searching for that stupid figurine. Whoever that Albus dude is, I need to get my hands on the item. Fortunately, I know Tony’s favorite merch sites, and indeed soon find the figurine that was released only recently and sold out already.

I make a swift picture search with it, finding it on eBay.

Are you buying him that?Arlo asks, surprised. He is always calm, composed, and very patient, exactly the type of wolf I need, or I would go berserk without his guidance.

Maybe it will cheer him up,I mutter. I didn’t spend much money during the last month. I basically stopped partying altogether and only then realized how much money I wasted on drinks. I saved so much by now, I can afford this little present for Tony. I’m putting it into my basket, relieved I don’t need to bid on it, and buy it instantly. The price is a complete rip-off, but I don’t care.I’m sick of this. I just want him to spit it out. Can’t you link his wolf and ask him what’s going on?

Lysander?Arlo asks, and the way he carefully says his name immediately raises my suspicions. It’s not that simple,he finally tells me.

What the fuck? Why isn’t it simple? He is your twin. You should be able to easily reach out to him.I pause when I notice the tentative gaze in Arlo’s eyes. I feel dread filling me.What?

Lysander is dormant,he finally tells me.

What the fuck!?I yell. Why didn’t you tell me!?

Because I don’t know why he stays hidden,Arlo tells me.And you have enough on your plate already.

I do not have too much on my plate to care for my family,I huff.

Arlo seems to contemplate my words before he plops down in my mind.Okay, we’ll deal with it later. But for now, getyour act together, approach our mate, and talk to her. Settle that problem now, because I assure you if you don’t do that, Anthony will just be more upset. We can talk about everything else afterwards. Remember? One step after another.

I take a deep breath, noticing the scent of lilies filling my nostrils, as my eyes land on the stunning woman whom I’m honored to call my mate. She is small in height, despite being a lycan, but she isn’t fragile. She has a fiery aura, and she is a strong fighter, a capable warrior, and an important political figure in the Council.

She is a fucking ace, a trump card, the grand prize.

And I’m not.

I didn’t know it was her, not at first. It’s probably because she wasn’t eighteen yet that we didn’t feel the mate bond between us. But I felt drawn to her, to her sarcasm and sass and to the way she fucking stood up against me and told me off.
