“I’m Steven, but everyone calls me Steve,” he says with an awkward smile. It’s cute to see him that way. He is such a strong and muscular guy, and suddenly he is all shy in front of this tiny woman. He reaches out his hand tentatively, smiling happily when Amaryllis carefully puts her hand into his. Her hand looks so small in his rough ones. He beams at her. “You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.”
Amaryllis’ cheeks flush a bit.
“Can you feel the mate bond?” Freya asks her softly.
“I can feel the hint of a pull,” she admits. “And some of the tingles.”
“It will get stronger once the wolfsbane is out of your system,” I reassure her.
She looks at Steve now. “Are you sure you even want me?” she stutters, her lips trembling slightly, probably fearing rejection.
“Absolutely.” Steve beams.
“Accept her, bro,” Marcel pushes softly, his expression one of happiness and joy for his friend. “I know this isn’t the most romantic way to do it, but this is the perfect way to keep her safe!”
“Oh, right,” Steve blushes a bit. “I…I…will accept you, to keep you safe. But you don’t need to do that in return. You can wait until you’re ready and feel the bond.”
Amaryllis looks at him in surprise and smiles shyly while she nods.
“What’s your full name?” Steve asks.
“We don’t know our surnames for most parts,” Freya explains when her friend looks at her for help.
“Alright.” Steve nods. “I, Steven Preston, accept you, Amaryllis, as my mate.”
Amaryllis’ eyes widen in disbelief and cautious hopefulness. “Thank you,” she whispers. “I can already feel the connection between us…”
A bright smile spreads on Steve’s lips. “I’m so lucky.” he exclaims.
“For real,” Anthony mutters. “Maybe I should also start roaming the pack grounds once more.”
“I was just thinking the same.” Marcel chuckles.
Elodie snorts. “I pass.”
“Same.” Elise grins. “Good thing we aren’t eighteen yet. Just imagine if one of the warriors was to be our mate.”
Elodie gags a bit at the thought.
For a moment, it’s silent around us, then Freya clears her throat. “So, you are still going to take us with you?”
“Of course,” I say, surprised she would think otherwise.
“It’s just that I heard you’re leaving tomorrow. Something about an emergency in your pack.” She looks down at her fingers. “I thought you may just leave without us.”
I’m shocked she thinks I would leave her behind. Max growls in my mind, wanting me to grab her and kiss her fiercely to ensure she never doubts our feelings for her again. I decide this would scare her away, though, and settle for taking her into my arms again. “I’d never leave without you.”
“What was your original plan?” she asks curiously. “How come you are leaving this soon?”
“The plan was to spend a few weeks here instead of just one, mingle with the pack, train with the warriors, and slowly uncover their hidden wrong-doings and secrets,” Henry says in a straightforward tone. “We didn’t expect this pack to be so blatantly shitty!”
When we look at him, he shrugs. “What? I’m just being honest.”
“I can’t believe I’m saying this,” Elodie mutters. “But I agree.”
“It’s good that you and Amaryllis are here now,” I say to my mate. “We can think about how to stage your escape.” Before I can nudge the others to share their opinions and ideas, something small comes squeezing through the crack of the door, fluttering towards us.
“Trixie?” Steve asks in surprise, obviously relieved to see her, while Amaryllis’ eyes widen when she sees the fairy.
