I’m surprised. “You noticed it too?” I honestly thought it was due to the mate bond, but I could feel her inner strength somehow.

“She radiates something, something strong…” Marcel says, confirming my thoughts. “I don’t think it would surprise them if she ran away. We need to make sure to stage it properly, though.”

I take a moment to consider; then I nod toward Elise and Elodie. “I think this is a task for the both of you.”

They exchange a knowing look and smirk. “Oh, Elise.” Elodie takes her sister’s hand. “I think it’s about time we check out the kitchen again. Thatiswhere all of us women folk belong. At least, in this pack.”

“Absolutely, Elodie.” Elise giggles.

“Be careful snooping around,” I warn them. “And be back in time to get ready for dinner.”

They both give me a thumbs-up before leaving the room to sneak into the kitchen. I sigh, feeling anxious about everything. I wish I could fast-forward time and jump ahead a week to where we’ve all safely made it out of here.

“Trixie,” I call out.

Her tiny head pops out of Steve’s pocket. “Yes?”

“Could you please do me a favor?”

“Of course.” She beams, fluttering towards me and landing on my palm. “What would you like me to do?”

“Could you possibly spy on the alpha?” I ask thoughtfully. “I need you to be very cautious and stealthy, though.”

“Absolutely.” She beams in excitement, leaving glitter all over my palm. “I’m so happy I can finally do something to help.”

“Just don’t poop glitter,” Marcel teases.

Trixie gives him a deathly glare, which is about as scary as an attack from a ladybug. “Just be careful,” I tell her once more. “We can’t risk anything happening.”

“Trust me, Finn,” she says with emphasis. “Flora…I mean, your mom asked me to help you all for a reason.”

*FREYA*

I’m careful not to look happy for the rest of the day. But every time I see my mate, my Finn, my mood gets a huge boost of endorphins. I’m lucky that everyone is so busy pretending to be part of a wonderful pack so that our guests won’t get suspicious that they don’t pay much attention to me. Little do they know that my mate only needed a minute of exposure to realize how much of a shit-show this pack is.

I’m cleaning the kitchen counter when the twin girls come sniffing around, apparently interested in the kitchen and how everything is organized here. They are subtle and appear so innocent that no one feels suspicious.

Eventually, Ludovica sends me to show them around. “It’s nice weather today,” one of them muses out of the blue while I show them where we keep our food and how we try to handle the cold temperatures.

“Very nice weather,” the other one agrees.

I look at them confused before saying, “It has stopped snowing, but I wouldn’t call it—”

“Perfect weather for a run.” Twin A interrupts me. It’s like I’m not here, and they are talking between themselves.

“Yes, a run,” her sister muses, emphasizing on the word run.

“I think it’s always good to get out and run as wolves,” the other adds.

“Absolutely. I mean, we always need to make sure everyone knows where we’ve run off to. We leave tracks and other traces, after all. Sometimes it’s important to do so, so that the others will know where to find us,” twin B points out.

I halt in my movement. Slowly, it dawns on me what they are going on about. I pretend to join their conversation, understanding to keep it subtle to avoid prying ears. “We don’t run much here in Blood Snow,” I say.

“Then it’s about time you prepare for it, for when the time comes.” One of them beams.

“You never know,” the other agrees. “Especially with all this fantastic weather.”

“It can change fast!”
