Suddenly, Flora’s last expression comes to my mind again. She killed the warrior, but didn’t help me climb back up the cliff. Was everything a lie? But she was so lovely to me… why would she? Maybe she knew the darkness would mean me endangering her family.
If that’s true, then it is better this way. I don’t want to endanger anyone I love.
Stop it. Stop the pity party!
I can hear her voice in my mind.
Sereia. She is still here!
What…
Embrace it!
Embrace what?
There is something in us,Sereia exclaims, panicked.A light! We need to find it. Search for me in your mind… it’s right there.
I open my eyes to the darkness in front of me. The icy water should be numbing me or hurting me like sharp needles poking my skin, but it doesn’t. I’m not feeling cold. Something inside my mind seems to glow, a tiny piece of me. I focus on the light, trying to embrace it just like Sereia said.
Sereia, what’s going on?
I have no idea.
Why am I not dead yet?I demand to know. I’m sinking further, but instead of feeling the pressure of the water, my lungs seem to open up. I clasp my neck, feeling ripples going through my skin there.
What…
I carefully move my arms, noticing how I stop sinking. The water around me doesn’t seem as dark as before. Instead, I can see different colors in it, as well as fish and other sea animals.
Am I dying?
Sereia, you really don’t know what’s going on?
I genuinely have no idea,my wolf says nervously.I’m a wolf, Freya. I don’t know what goes on in the water.
You told me to embrace it…I ask. What did you mean?
I don’t know. But when we fell, Flora linked me and told me the same thing.
Flora said… so she didn’t want to kill me. I frown, noticing that my thoughts are clearer now that my panic has settled and I’ve realized I’m not drowning. Of course, she didn’t want to kill me. If she wanted me dead, she would have allowed the wolf to finish me off, but she was adamant I needed to survive, at least long enough to fall into the water.
Could it be the prophecy?
Freya, I can feel a presence,Sereia says, close to our right.
I turn, noticing a faint light in that direction. I don’t question it anymore as I have no idea what I’m doing here anyway. May as well explore the light. Although I don’t know how to swim, I find myself moving easily through the water, even doing fun little spins and tricks here and there. It feels surprisingly calming and relaxing so far underwater. Like the world has stopped moving, and nothing else matters.
I reach a giant rock, carefully circling it. What lies in front of me makes my mouth drop open in shock.
There are two figures in front of me. One is illuminated, a white light all around her. I can’t make out her face properly, but it seems like everything about her is lit up, her hair silver and long. The other one looks darker in comparison, her complexion olive, with an almost blue tinge. Her hair is dark and wet; she has a three-pointed scepter in her hands, and in her hair, a crown made out of shells and crabs. Both of them look alluring and strong in their own way.
“Took you long enough,” the dark figure grumbles. “I was growing old here.”
“Don’t be such a grump.” The one emitting light chuckles.
“If that child of yours didn’t make sure she fell off that cliff, we might have needed to wait for the next blue moon.”
I can make out the silhouette of a woman in the light. She smiles at me. “My backup plan worked, it seems.”
