“You know, I just had a great idea!” My mother beams excitedly and hammers her flat palm against my dad’s chest. “I want to go lingerie shopping too!”
Dad stills momentarily, his eyes turning black for a moment as his lycan comes forward. “Is that so?”
She twirls around and hops forward. “Aurel,” she calls her gamma. “Edward!”
Both her gamma and beta pop up at her side immediately, slightly panicked. “Yes, Luna?”
Aurel, in particular, looks flustered.
“You two need to take me lingerie shopping.”
“What…but, Luna.” Edward looks like he is about to die inside.
She puts her hands on her hips. “Don’t you want to go shopping with me?”
“Of course, I do,” Edward stutters. “But, Luna…”
“Last time you wanted to show us what you were about to get,” Aurel mutters, wincing slightly when my father glares at him. “We cherish our lives.”
“But you know your alpha’s favorite colors,” she exclaims. She tilts her head. “Maybe I could try something in black for a change.” She turns to face Dad. “Elden, how would you like me in black?”
Something dark swirls in his eyes again. His lycan, Regis, is on the surface.
“He likes it,” she exclaims to her beta and gamma. Edward has lost all the color in his face, while Aurel seems to resign himself to his fate already.
“Maybe Aurelia could go with you?” I offer.
Aurelia, who has been listening to our conversation, leans out of the kitchen window. “No way! I just went shopping for the sex lives of three of my brothers! I won’t add my father to the list!”
To my surprise, it’s Steve who saves the day. “Isn’t it more fun with fellow girls, Flora?” he asks thoughtfully. “I don’t think Ryllis would have had as much fun had I joined her.”
Mom tilts her head. “You have a point.” She beams. “Oh, I could ask your mom, Steve. I haven’t been out with Rosalee in a while.” She throws her arms up, and runs towards the pack house. “Rosie!” she yells. “We are going lingerie shopping for our men!”
I shake my head slightly. Typical Mom, but it’s hard not to find her endearing. Thankfully, due to the ruckus my mom created, everyone disperses fast. Very fast, and I’m starting to wonder if she did it on purpose, especially since Dad looks completely unfazed. Before we can go our separate ways and enjoy our afternoon, though, I remind Steve that the pack doctor wants to see our mates, and we all agree to go there immediately to get it over and done with.
To my surprise, Dr. Hanson awaits us with a young she-wolf next to him. “This is my assistant, Frida. She is going to get her license soon, and I thought it would be nice if she could assist us.”
“Thank you, Dr. Hanson,” I say, relieved he has a woman with him.
For the next hour, they take blood samples from our mates and carefully check on their wolves. I notice how Frida is particularly gentle with Ryllis until she feels more comfortable being there. Ryllis even leaves with her alone for further check-ups, something they apparently don’t want us all to know about.
“I’ll wait for the test results from the laboratory,” Hanson informs us. “But Miss Freya and Miss Amaryllis have obviously been injected with wolfsbane and other drugs that toned down their abilities to shift, to mind link, and to heal. It will take some time for their wolves to heal fully. Once I know exactly what they were injected with, I’ll ensure they get an antidote. A few years ago, Claire worked hard on the antidote for wolfsbane, so that’s one thing less to worry about. It’s the other stuff I need to know more about.” He pauses, eyeing Freya carefully. “I noticed you’re both on birth control.”
She nods. “In my former pack, lower-ranked wolves aren’t allowed to conceive.” When we all stare at her in shock, she sighs. “What can I say,” she mutters. “You learn to adapt to your surroundings and accept a lot of things just to survive,” she admits quietly. “What other option did we have?”
My heart breaks yet again. This time, I can also clearly feel her sadness from the mate bond—these monsters. I reach out my hand, taking hers into mine and squeezing it. “This is not your fault,” I tell her softly. “The fact that you, Ryllis, and these other girls survived makes you the true heroes. We’ll talk to my father about everything tonight, and I promise you once Elise and Elodie are back, we’ll get down to business and free Blood Snow.”
Freya smiles at me and leans her head against my shoulder.
Hanson smiles warmly at us. “Your wolf is going to regain its strength soon,” he promises. “Maybe Alpha Elden can help you further. He helped a lot of weakened warriors to reconnect with their wolves. As for birth control, I can remove it the moment you don’t want it anymore. It’s your body and your decision.”
Freya nods thankfully. “For now, I’ll keep it,” she says. “But when Finn and I are ready for our own family…”
My eyes widen. She is thinking about our future family. One day we’ll be having our own pups!
That’s great and all,Max grumbles. But what about the hot dogs? They are all cold and sloppy and sludgy by now.
I snort. “Babe.” I grin. “If we don’t get out of here soon and warm up those hot dogs you brought home, Max might take over and raid the hospital kitchen.”
