Mom’s eyes glint. “And you love it.”
I groan while Aurelia rolls her eyes and laughs. Before Mom can weird my mate out any further, I clear my throat. “Mom, Dad.” I smile and put my arm around Freya. “I’d like to introduce you to someone.”
My father takes a step back to look at me first, then at Freya, his expression one of surprise before a happy smile spreads across it. “So, she is…”
“She is my mate, Freya.” I beam proudly. “Steve and I met our mates in Blood Snow and made sure to take them with us when we had to escape. I wanted to tell you before we left the pack, but then Colton attacked, and there was no time.”
Dad reaches out his hand toward Freya, smiling warmly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Freya. My son has been looking for you for quite some time now.”
Freya’s tension leaves her body, and she shakes his hand. “Thank you for the warm welcome,” she says, unusually shy. Colton is the only alpha she’s ever known, so it’s no surprise she is wary, but I’m proud of how she carries herself.
Mom’s mouth drops open when she eyes Freya, her gaze wandering over her like she is searching for something, and for a moment, she doesn’t say anything at all. It’s like her eyes follow something I can’t see. “Mom?” I urge.
“Oh, sorry.” She snaps out of it immediately, returning to her bubbly self. “I just…she is so pretty!”
Now that’s the worst excuse she has ever come up with to distract from whatever her gift is doing. Going by my father’s curious gaze toward her, he thinks the same.
Mom recovers fast and pulls Freya into a hug immediately. “You are so cute.” She giggles. “Finn is good to you, isn’t he?”
Freya smiles warmly. “He is my savior,” she says.
“I think you would have saved yourself if I hadn’t come,” I tell her with emphasis. I’m sure of it by now. She might look skinny due to being malnourished, but she is smart and has a strong will, and from what I’ve heard so far, the warriors were scared of her. Her wolf is very capable too. I bet if I hadn’t come, she would have found a way for herself and Amaryllis to disappear.
“You have a long story to tell,” my mom says earnestly. Her gaze is a bit sad when she looks from Freya to Ryllis. “Let’s make sure you all get comfortable for now and get some rest. Aurelia called us on the way home. The guest rooms are prepared.”
“Can we stay too, Flora?” Steve asks.
“Of course, Stevie.” She smiles warmly.
He looks at Ryllis with a smile. “They are my sister’s in-laws,” he explains.
Amaryllis nods, smiling gently when Mom flutters around her to dote on her. Everyone likes Mom, and even Ryllis can’t escape her charm, her shyness melting away around her like snow under the sun.
Meanwhile, Jace looks at Steve and me with our mates before shifting his gaze to his sons. “Please tell me you found your mates too.”
“Sorry, Dad.” Henry chuckles.
“However, we got into our first real fight,” Anthony exclaims. “Like an actual life and death situation.”
“Only an alpha would be proud of that,” Janice mutters.
Jace smiles proudly, proving her right. “And you came out of it alive!”
“Yep.” Anthony beams at his father and lifts his shirt a bit. “Look, I got my first scar too. And the best part is, it’s permanent!”
“Awesome man, that’s so cool,” one of his friends, a young warrior who followed Jace and Janice, says enviously, while Jace’s face falls and his lips turn into a thin line. Anger flashes in his eyes for his son getting hurt, but Janice elbows him subtly and shakes her head.
Mom takes Freya’s hand gently. “Come, Freya. I think you all need a little rest and something to eat.”
“Thank you, Luna,” she says, smiling carefully.
“You have to call me Flora, though.” Mom giggles. “What do you want to eat?”
“I really don’t mind.” Freya answers honestly. “I’ll eat anything.”
“And your young friend here?” Mom gestures towards Ryllis, who blushes at having the attention on her. “Amaryllis, did I catch that right?” Mom asks gently. I’ve never seen her like this. Actually, I have never seen her at her luna duties at all. It didn’t occur to me that she was gathering information by what she was doing.
Ryllis returns her smile shyly. “Like Freya, I’ll eat anything.”
