I still have a role to play, so I make sure to look and play my part when I go to dinner with my group. Just like last night, the alpha is present, so are his warriors and Benjamin. As usual, no she-wolves are around, except for Elodie, Elise, and the slaves that serve us. I wonder what these warriors do with their mates and women… Elodie and Elise told us that when they went to see the infirmary there were she-wolves, so not everyone lives the life of a slave—at least that’s something. But are they truly free?
They’re not even allowed in the pack house unless the alpha specifically invites them. They mostly stay at home and do what their men ask them to do. It’s just sad and frankly enraging! They might not be slaves, but they are still prisoners of their pack, constantly at the mercy of their cruel alpha, his men, and probably their mates.
I take a deep breath of air when I sit down to catch more of Freya’s intoxicating scent. I’m proud to say that my group is playing their parts well. We made sure the girls sit between us today, and Anthony even engages in a conversation with one of the warriors next to him, talking about which girl he finds the hottest. Marcel does the same on the other side of the table, his eyes following one girl or another before he engages in small talk with another warrior.
Meanwhile, I make sure to look depressed and fed up with the world. “You aren’t in the mood for a conversation?” Alpha Colton takes the bait eventually.
I pretend to be surprised and slightly embarrassed by his sudden attention. “I apologize, Alpha. I was thinking about the tasks awaiting us tomorrow.”
Benjamin, who is sitting next to his father, looks at me. “Do you really have to leave?” he asks, and to my surprise…he looks almost sad.
His father tosses him a deathly glare, his eyes glossing over. Benjamin stands up. “I will make sure to get you your whisky,” he mutters.
I watch him leave, feeling slightly surprised and very suspicious. Why is he sending his son away?
“You should relax tonight,” Colton says sweetly, pouring me another glass of wine.
Don’t drink it!Max growls.
I carefully nib at the glass without taking a real sip. “Distraction would be everything tonight,” I admit.
“Well, boy.” The asshole flashes me a sickly sweet grin. He points at the girls serving us, and Freya is one of them. “We have a lot of distractions available.”
I want to stab him in his eye with my fork and drive my knife through his ear for suggesting anyone could buy my mate, but I will my anger down. I need to save her and not make things worse for her. “You have a point…”
“Of course I do.” He chuckles coldly. “Just choose a few girls for the night.”
I pretend to think it through, to feel torn, then I sigh and nod. “You are right. Releasing some tension will do me some good. And the other guys could use it too.”
“Of course. Which girls do you like?” he asks me. “I’ll ensure they are sent to your room after dinner.”
I pretend to take a sip from my glass of wine before shifting my gaze around the room. To Colton, it needs to look like I’m checking out all the present girls. “That one,” I finally say, while nodding toward Freya nonchalantly. “Redheads always get to me.”
To my surprise, he seems to be torn about my choice. But why? He for sure doesn’t care, why would he not want me to choose her?
“She’s nothing special,” he says in a matter-of-fact tone, and I want to strangle this pisshead for insulting my mate. Max throws invisible daggers at him too. “Are you certain it’s her you want?”
“There is something feisty about her.” I snicker. “I like them feisty.” I decide to bluff a bit. “But if it’s a problem…”
Colton takes the bait once more. “Not at all. You can have her. Anyone else?”
Freya’s friend doesn’t seem to be around. Freya told me she always makes sure to hide her from prying eyes. Time to switch tactics. “I just remembered something…” I perk a bit to make it more believable. “I saw that redhead with another girl yesterday when I walked by the kitchen. A small one with big eyes.”
“Oh yes!” Now his reaction is one of approval. “Amaryllis. She is a favorite here.”
Did he really just say that?
I can feel how Elise, who is sitting next to me, stiffens visibly.
“Fantastic.” I flash him a thankful smile. “Thank you for your generosity, Alpha Colton.”
We make it through dinner without any incidents, or snide comments, although I notice that some of Colton’s closer men keep watching us. They probably think they are being subtle, but Max can easily detect their gazes.
It’s about time we get out of here,he grumbles.I haven’t had a good sleep for days.
Wow, your priorities.
I want to cuddle with my mate and rest my head on her lap.He sighs dreamily.
