Sereia, I couldn’t talk to Lady Leila more, as we ran out of time, but do you know how a prophecy works exactly?
I don’t know for sure,Sereia admits. From what I understand, they are hints. A vision is much clearer, but a prophecy is just a hint of something big that’s supposed to happen. I believe the oracle told you the truth for sure. I can feel it.
But what are her words supposed to mean?I want to know.I wasn’t born in darkness, was I? And who is the prince? Arman?
I don’t think we should take it literally,Sereia muses.A prophecy is often vague because it might be dangerous for those involved to know too much.
At least, the night of the blue moon should be an obvious hint.I frown. It’s in a few weeks.I pause.Sereia, will we need to decide between a path of light and darkness?
My stomach churns at the thought. It sounds so… foreboding. How will I know what’s going to be right and wrong?
Let’s not overthink it for now,she soothes me.The night of the blue moon is still weeks from today. We’ll have more time to think about it. I think we should continue with your plan. One problem at a time.
Do you mean the nonexistent plan to get away from here?I ask.
We need to get away, she emphasizes.Freya, this place is dangerous for you and me. We don’t know how long we can keep the warriors at bay. What if they kill us one day? What about everyone else here? We need to find a way to save them, and we can’t do that by staying here.
You’re right,I agree.
I want to say more, but a guard is approaching me. This is rare and unusual; the guards usually steer clear of me at all costs. The fact that this one is heading straight for me instantly gives me a bad feeling.
Bow your head slightly,Sereia orders.Act meek.
I’m so grateful for her guidance at these moments. I only get through these situations most of the time because she helps me remember my role. If it weren’t for her, they would already know that wolfsbane doesn’t affect me as much as the others. I do as she says, bowing my head to show submission. Fortunately, the guard doesn’t seem too interested in me.
“The alpha wants to see you in his office,” he barks out shortly. “You have five minutes!”
My blood freezes in my veins. Alpha Colton is the man I normally make sure to avoid crossing paths with. It always ends badly for me. I curse my bad luck, but I can’t defy any order from him. Five minutes doesn’t leave me any time to overthink or consider what I may have done wrong. I’m running as fast as I can to make it there in time.
I arrive out of breath and panting, but before I can knock, he calls out, “Come in!” His voice is rough and void of any compassion.
I take a deep breath, willing my fear down before stepping inside. Alphas like submissive wolves, but they don’t like blatant fear, so I can’t appear too weak in front of him. I bow my head toward him. “Good evening, Alpha.”
“Come closer,” he commands.
Goddess, give me strength.
I step forward tentatively, tensing slightly when he stands abruptly. Suddenly, his broad chest is in front of me as he grabs my face by the cheeks with one hand, forcing me to look at him. His eyes are dark and full of malice. “I hear that you have been sneaking around with my son.”
What? That’s the last thing I would ever do…
Don’t deny it, don’t agree,Sereia chimes in, her voice tensed.
“It was just a coincidence, Alpha,” I say meekly.
“Is that so?” he huffs, his dark eyes glancing over at me. “I know you are a vile little witch. My son might have been weak once, but I’ve beaten the weakness out of him.”
I hate Benjamin with a passion, but a tiny piece of my heart clenches with sadness for him for constantly facing his father’s abuse. He was an innocent child once before he turned into a monster.
“Say it!” he demands. “Say that you will never bewitch and seduce him! I’ll know if you lie!”
Now that’s a reasonably easy promise to make. I take a deep breath. “I promise, Alpha. I will not in any way get close to, bewitch, or seduce Alpha Benjamin.”
“Good.” His frown grows, and his grip on my face tightens. “We’ll be having guests tomorrow. Warriors from an important pack. They are here to exchange a few formalities and learn more about the packs of the north.”
I don’t know why he’s even telling me this. All I can do is nod.
“Even though you are a little malicious witch, you are pleasing to the eyes,” he growls. “You will be serving the guests tomorrow. You and that pathetic little slave my warriors can’t keep their hands off.”
