“Fantastic, I might call you for help later,” I tell him.
Matthew beams in pride at having me value his mate.
Ludovica looks genuinely happy. “Some light in the darkness,” she finally says before she turns towards me and bows deeply. “Alpha Finn, I’ll answer all your questions, and I’ll be at your service whenever you need me.” She smiles. “Finally, this pack got lucky.”

The Widows
*FINN*
WhileFreyacontinuestoorganize everything in the pack house and deal with the empty cottages of pack members that either fell or were imprisoned, I have the unpleasant task of finally telling the concerned pack members that their mates and husbands fell during the war.
In the whole mess after the battle, many weren’t sure if their mates had fallen or were imprisoned. Ocean Snow has a lot of chosen mates, which is why they wouldn’t necessarily feel it through the mate bond. Their bond is weaker. They would feel that something happened, but as far as they would know, it could mean their men were just hurt; they might not feel the intensity of the bond being severed completely.
The first person’s details on my list lead me to a cute little cottage where a beautiful woman with wild chestnut-colored locks is brushing the snow off the fence. I recognize her from the first dinner we all had together. Freya had waved at her and seemed to know her.
“Are you Frankie?” I ask her.
She turns to look at me, her eyes widening. She bows deeply to me. “I apologize, Alpha. I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn’t see you approaching.”
“I didn’t come here to make you uncomfortable,” I say with a gentle smile. Goddess, this is difficult. These poor people have suffered so much already, and I have yet another blow for them. “I apologize, Frankie. I’m very sorry to tell you… your mate, unfortunately, he didn’t make it.“
“HE IS DEAD?” Frankie blurts out.
When I nod, she pumps her fist in the air and squeals. “Thank you, Goddess!”
My mouth drops open at her reaction. Talk about unexpected reactions. “Well, it looks like you are going to be alright,” I point out carefully.
“I felt some pain through our bond,” she explains. “But I wasn’t sure if he finally left me forever or if it was just where he punched me before he left.” She takes a deep breath. “Alpha, you not only freed me from a cruel alpha, but you also freed me from my daily abuser.”
I put my list into my pocket again, smiling at her. “And here I was, scared I was going to have to deal with displays of anger and sadness,” I say.
“Maybe some will react that way.” Frankie grins. “But most of us had our mating and markings arranged.”
I’m about to say something when I feel Anders approaching. He promised to come with me for this dreadful task which now looks far less daunting after talking to Frankie. Anders halts a few meters before us, his eyes widening. Frankie stares at him breathlessly. “Who’s that sexy hunk of meat there?” she asks in excitement.
I swallow my laugh. “That’s Anders. He is the pack’s beta as of today.”
“This day gets better and better,” Frankie squeals and hurries towards Anders.
He obviously wasn’t prepared for the whirlwind approaching him. When Frankie jumps at him, they both fall into the snow. “We’ll have to practice this.” Frankie giggles.
My reserved and very quiet beta, fated to that cute tomboy.
Another woman, Frankie’s neighbor, carefully steps closer. “Did my mate die too?” she asks hopefully.
“What’s your name?” I ask politely.
“Odette,” she explains. “His name is Gilbert.”
“Gilbert didn’t die, no.”
“Oh, no.” She sighs.
“But he was imprisoned.”
Odette looks hopeful again.
