“You’re so beautiful,” Nen whispers. “You look hot and like a predator!”

“I assume that’s a compliment?” I mutter.

“Of course,” Aenon reassures me. “Sirens are hunters. The more dangerous you look, the better!”

“Are you sirens too?” I ask. “Male sirens.”

“In general, only females are called sirens, as they are stronger,” he explains. “Technically, Nen and I are only mermen, but we are of siren heritage, which puts us above the general mermaids and mermen.”

I feel anxious again. Goddess, what will Finn and Max say? They will have a heart attack if he sees me like this. I hope Finn will still want me once he knows the truth. I shove these doubts aside. Helping my new family and friends is my priority right now.

I turn to Aenon. “Lead the way.”

*FINN*

It feels like the bond to Freya is breaking, making me double over in pain. A nightmare coming to life. But then, as fast as it happened, I feel her pain and fear subside again. There is still a dull feeling telling me that something is wrong.

I can’t believe I have to fight off Alpha Douchebag here while my mate might be in danger.

We need to trust matey,Max exclaims, making me wonder when he became the voice of reason. If she were in grave danger, we’d know. And Mom told us not to look back, remember?

Fuck, he is right. But still, something is off. My mate is out there, probably fighting something, and I’m here dealing with Alpha Cunton who apparently believes he is the Moon Goddess incarnate.

I’m so fed up with him already. How did Freya manage to survive nineteen years with him?

While I fend off some of his warriors who throw themselves at me, I notice my sister getting closer to Colton. I wonder why these men are putting up such a fight; it’s like they believe they can get the upper hand. But how? I don’t see them winning anything here.

Out of the corner of my eye, I can see a dark brown wolf rushing towards my sister. I recognize him by his scent.Aurelia,I link her.The wolf that is approaching you, that’s Benjamin.I pause.I think you should test him, see whether he is truly like his asshole father or if he wants to be better; do better. He may be redeemable yet.

The regal, beautiful beast my sister shifted into turns to look at me. Duh, her gaze says. Oh right, I forgot how sassy her lycan is. It’s like a lioness caught in a lycan’s body.

Aurelia allows Benjamin to lunge at her, putting up a bit of a fight to not look suspicious while she allows herself to be overpowered by him. For an alpha like her, it’s easier said than done. We hate to be cornered and won’t just succumb to anyone. But then, Aurelia can be cunning if she wants to be.

“Kill her!” Colton yells at his son.

Aurelia shifts back to her human form, and I notice Benjamin’s wolf hesitating slightly. She looks at him through big pitiful eyes, and I’m impressed by the show she puts on. Benjamin would have no chance against her, but for now, he needs to believe he has. He shifts to his human form as well.

He wraps his hands around Aurelia’s neck, squeezing it, but I can see the tremble going through his body. Aurelia keeps looking at him, her eyes sad and fearful, while I notice her beta, Nox, already circling them. He is ready to rip Benjamin’s head off if Aurelia pushes her game too far.

“Kill her,” Colton bellows. “She is just a worthless whore, like all women.”

Benjamin looks at Aurelia again before he lets go of her neck, stumbling backward like he just got burned. “No,” he whispers.

I sigh, noticing how Aurelia looks at me.And?She asks.

An Academy Award worthy performance,I tell her.

This guy is pathetic for an alpha, she points out.But he didn’t kill me, so at least that’s something. However, we know he has beaten and abused people who are weaker than us.

Do you want him dead?

No,she says.I believe in our laws, and I believe in redemption. I still find him weak and repulsive for what he did. He was a bystander, and that’s disgusting, especially considering he is an alpha, but I don’t want his blood on my hands.

I nod. If Benjamin gets a second chance at life, it definitely has to be far away from this pack and far away from Freya. He has done so much damage, but maybe there is hope for him somewhere.

Aurelia and I get pulled out of our silent conversation by a new ruckus that’s happening. Benjamin has stumbled back towards his father, just to be punched hard by him. Colton is hovering above him, wrapping his hands around his son’s neck. “If you can’t fight, you aren’t worth anything,” he yells. “Why was I cursed with such a weak son?”

I’m horrified. Sure, Benjamin is a pathetic dickhead, but he is Colton’s son! His own son! Does this man have no heart at all?
