“Well, every rule comes with an exception,” Selene states.
“Yeah, with you, it’s more like there are a few rules within a ton of exceptions.” Amphitrite snickers.
“Oh, Amphitrite,” she smiles brightly. “Don’t pretend you aren’t happy about this outcome.”
Amphitrite sighs and turns to me, my eyes meeting hers for the first time. They are dark, almost black at first glance, but upon looking deeper, I notice it’s a dark blue, like the ocean. “You can shift,” she tells me. “But not to a wolf. Your wolf spirit remains with you as your guidance. Everything else you need to discover by yourself.”
“Yes.” Selene winks at me. “And you might want to look up your wolf’s name.”
They give me one last pull before disappearing, and I break through the ocean’s surface with a loud gasp. I pant heavily, gasping for air. For a second, I feel like my lungs are collapsing, like my body can’t fill my lungs with air anymore. Then, however, I feel something in my body change again, my lungs opening up to the outside air once more.
I look around, wondering if I dreamed it all, before I notice I’m still in the middle of the water, right below the cliff.
Anxiously, I reach out in my mind, and to my relief, I’m greeted by the presence of my wolf. She is still here. I can’t believe what just happened. For many years I tried to find out who my parents were and where they came from, but no one in the pack knew anything. And those who knew, like Alpha Colton, didn’t care. Ludovica only knew that they died during a rogue attack, but other than that… nothing.
Finally, I can get in touch with my roots. I can understand who I am and maybe even help Finn in this battle.
Sereia,I whisper, remembering my Goddess’s last words.Do you know what your name means?
Yes.Her voice sounds surprised, like she’s having trouble grasping what happened to us. I can’t blame her. I feel the same.
And?I ask curiously.
Silence greets me for a moment before Sereia speaks again. It means siren.
forty-nine
The Iron Luna
*FREYA*
I’mnotsurehowlong I’ve been floating in the water, trying to digest what Sereia told me. I feel like a flotsam, but I can’t help it. Apparently, meeting the Moon Goddess and Goddess of the Ocean wasn’t as much of a shock as hearing what I supposedly am.
The Moon Goddess told me to pay attention to the meaning of my wolf’s name.
A siren… like a mermaid?
Freya,my wolf whines. Are you still with me?
Whining is not usual for my wolf, making my alarm bells start ringing instantly. Why? What’s wrong?
What’s wrong?she huffs. We are still floating around in the ocean, in the ice-cold water, if I might add!
I’m not feeling cold,I muse. Not even a little bit.I pause.Do you think back to when we traveled through the cave… and I felt a presence in the lake there… that it was the Goddess of the Ocean or maybe another siren?
I have no idea,Sereia mutters.I just know I’m not a water animal, and I hope Max likes fish. And that I’d rather be up there fighting with the others.
Fighting with the others. Right…oh shoot! I completely forgot! There is a battle happening. Finn, my poor mate! He definitely felt me getting hurt. I try to gather my senses, and emit positive feelings through our bond, so Finn knows I didn’t die. I wish I could mind link him, but the distance is too far, especially with me floating around in the ocean.
I need to find a way back to land. I can try to figure out what all this means later.
Sereia, the lake in Blood Snow, the one Colton probably led his warrior to, it’s salt water, isn’t it?
Yes, it’s connected to the ocean with an underground river, she muses before I can feel her eyes narrow at me.I believe Cunton’s escape route leads through this area, and that’s why he likes to fight there. Why? What are you planning, and why do I feel like I won’t like it?
Amphitrite said I will be able to shift,I explain. But not to a wolf. Which means…
Oh, Goddess… you’re going to try it now, aren’t you?Sereia sighs.
