Dad snorts. “Vincent went on a trip with his mate. Preparations for the winter solstice of Jade’s coven, it seems.”
I grin. Right, I forgot. I turn to Freya. “Beta Vincent’s fated mate is Celine’s great-grandmother.”
She stares at me, her mouth dropping open. “You’re teasing me.”
“No.” I chuckle.
“It’s the truth,” Mom chirps. “She is almost 1,000 years old.”
Freya’s eyes widen. “That’s a story you need to tell me another time,” she mutters.
“I will,” I promise.
For now, we have more urgent matters to discuss. Before we can do so, Jace looks at me and clears his throat. “Listen, Finn…my boys told me they were giving you a hard time at first, Henry in particular. I’m sorry—”
“Uncle Jace.” I look at him earnestly. “We might have had a rough start, but your sons were very helpful. Anthony took a bullet so that Marcel wouldn’t get hurt. Both of them did a fantastic job.”
Jace looks me in the eye, and when he sees I mean it, a smile lights up his face. He looks proud and happy all of a sudden. “Thank you for helping them find their path. I’m so thankful you helped them realize they have it in them to become good leaders.”
Now that’s settled my father gets to the point, demanding to know all the details of what happened. I tell them everything, with Marcel and Steve’s help. We try not to leave out anything. Jace’s face darkens when I tell them about how they tried to get rid of us. The only part I don’t tell them about is when Henry was about to sacrifice himself and obviously, the secret the twins revealed to us. It was a very vulnerable moment for them, and they deserve to tell their parents about it on their own terms.
Once I’m finished, Freya takes over, explaining to us how Alpha Colton runs Blood Snow, and all the things he allows and even encourages under his watch, and the way they mistreat slaves and omegas. I didn’t know all the details yet; to hear them all at once makes it even worse. It’s horrifying how this monster abuses his power. Max grows increasingly restless, his anger growing as Freya reveals more about Colton.
“Omegas were not allowed to shift?” my father asks in disbelief. “Their connection to their wolves got cut immediately?”
Jace shakes his head in dismay, his eyes darkening. He must have heard a good portion from his sons already.
“Dad, they are almost like a cult,” I tell him. “I don’t know how else to describe it… it’s the whole atmosphere, the way the warriors stick together, how they follow their leader blindly, the whole dynamic, the brainwashing, the way they treat their women. Back when Liam freed Red Claw… their old alpha was a psychopath, too, but Colton is different from him. He is not crazy; he is very well aware of what he is doing. He is smart and very cruel.”
“I agree.” Marcel nods. “It’s a very creepy place. And from Freya, we now know the whole extent of what’s happening.”
Dad looks at Freya, an inscrutable expression on his face. “Freya, when you say the warriors order girls to their parties. Does this imply what I think it does?”
Freya nods, and I can see Steve’s face darken slightly.
Mom shakes her head sadly. “This should never have happened.”
“Elise and Elodie will bring this all to the Council,” Dad says. “And hopefully, it will finally change something.”
“As it is, the Council doesn’t seem too useful,” Freya mutters before blushing profusely. “I apologize. I didn’t mean to—”
“No, you are right,” Dad interrupts her and stops her from panicking. “This is exactly what my nephew Eric and his twin advisors are trying to prove.” He pauses. “The Council is an old institution. They mean well, but a lot has been overlooked in the last few years.”
“Eric wants to establish a base of the Council here,” I explain to Freya. “It would make it much easier to deal with packs like Blood Snow that way and also raise awareness to pack members that there is a place they can send their complaints to.”
“What happened in Blood Snow will give Prince Eric the upper hand,” Jace says. “I don’t think the Council will decline his proposal now.”
“Freya, you said the warriors were scared of you.” Dad shifts the attention back to my mate.
“The warriors threw one of their parties and ordered me to their room. I was supposed to be a surprise gift to the alpha’s son. Rumor says I almost castrated Benjamin and the warriors that night,” she admits.
Jace grins. “You got yourself a lethal mate, Finn.”
“She is the best,” I say with conviction.
There is this look in my mother’s eyes again. Goodness gracious, her gift is excruciating for everyone else. I wonder how my father is able to handle it. All these hints and pieces, without ever hearing the whole truth. She and Dad exchange a gaze now, and I can see their eyes glossing over.
To my surprise, Dad suddenly shifts the topic away from Freya. I thought he would inquire more about her strange powers.
