“And the child?”

“A girl. Evangeline.”

“Lovely name.” I meditated on that for a moment. “Evangeline Winter.”

“Manon’s thinking of Lovechilde-Winter. She wants our name in there somehow.”

I nodded slowly. “That means Bethany will come swinging by, I suppose.”

“Yes, big sis will use the birth of her grandchild as good reason to pounce upon us.” Savanah rolled her eyes. “She’s got herself involved with a rock star.”

My recently injected brow struggled to frown. “Really?”

“Carson’s agency did the security for the band, and there was Bethany, hanging around in the green room. The rock star’s twenty-five, I’m told.”

“Are they successful?”

“Very. They’re called Wild Side. I uploaded their latest song, and it’s catchy. Even Carson likes it, which is saying something, given his living-in-the-sixties tastes.” She chuckled. “The concert was a sell-out. So he’s obviously rich.”

Bethany with a rock star? That took me aback, given her history with older men. “But she’s nearly forty.”

“She’s had a lot of work done, Mummy. She looks like Kim Kardashian without the big bum.”

Having had work to firm up my sagging breasts plus a chin tuck, I wasn’t about to criticize my first-born for warding off the ravages of gravity.

I nodded pensively. “If it keeps her out of trouble, all the better.”

Savanah smiled. “Never a dull moment with Beth.”

Drake knocked at the entrance.

“Come in,” I said.

Savanah placed her beautiful, drowsy baby into the bassinet and got up to hug him. “Congrats.”

“I’ve just come from the hospital.” He smiled brightly.

Drake had kept his mathematical abilities hidden from us in the beginning. Not that I held that against him. I viewed vanity as an ugly human trait. It did, however, come as a complete shock when he announced he’d not only gotten a college degree but had also become an expert in cyber security.

At twenty-five, that was some achievement. I had to ask him how he managed that, and he sheepishly owned up to hacking computers during his misspent youth.

Now very much a changed person, he was the right choice for my granddaughter. He would always stand by Manon. Of that, I was more than certain. And strong, dependable individuals were what our family needed to remain a tight, successful, and powerful unit.

“Evie is beautiful.” Drake looked like he might cry.

“Oh, you’ve shortened her name already?” I preferred the name Evangeline.

He shrugged. “She looks like an Evie to me. Big girl.”

“What was her weight?”

“Close to nine pounds.” He glowed, a proud father.

“Well, congrats again.” Savanah kissed him on the cheek and then turned to me. “I best mosey off. Ta-ta.”

I waited until Savanah and the baby were gone before speaking. “Thanks for coming here at such a time. And from London.”

“That’s okay.” He smiled faintly.
