“Why aren’t you saying yes?”
“This is a really big step. Are you sure we are ready for it?”
He chuckled. “I feel like this is the tamest step we’ve taken in all of this.”
Sophie smiled. “You’re probably right about that. I’m just not sure your bachelor pad would be the best place to raise a child.”
“Then let me show you. Come over tonight. Let me make you dinner and give you a tour.”
“You’re going to make me dinner?” She smirked.
He furrowed his brows at her teasingly. “I can cook, you know. I made you breakfast, remember?” He laughed. “Please?”
Sophie exhaled loudly. “Fine.”
Noah smiled. “Great, I’ll send Ryan to pick you up around seven.” He looked back at the cake on the table in front of them. “I don’t know about you but I like the red velvet. It feels sentimental in a way. Reminds me of us.”
Us?Noah hadn’t meant it like that.
“Why, because it’s pretending to be something it’s not?” She questioned jokingly.
“No,” Noah said quickly. “Because we had it that night at Polly’s. When you told me you were pregnant.”
Sophie blushed. “Oh. Right. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Sophie stood, “I’m going to go tell her which one we want. Might just give her a few more notes on the vision. So I’ll see you tonight, all right?”
“Yeah, okay. I’ll see you tonight.” By the time Noah stood, she had already disappeared to go find the baker.
Noah stopped to pick up some things for dinner and texted his maid to do an emergency clean of his apartment. He wanted everything to be perfect when Sophie came over.
It was only three in the afternoon, so that meant he had a little over four hours until Sophie arrived. That was enough time to shower, cook, and have his place cleaned.
On the drive home, his mind settled on Sophie’s comment.Pretending to be something they weren’t?It was hardly a lie, so he couldn’t be mad at her. Theywerepretending to be something they weren’t, so why did it bother him so much?
CHAPTER18
SOPHIE
Noah’s driver showed up at seven on the dot, as promised. Not sure what to expect, Sophie had chosen to dress simply, in a white sundress with beige wedges. She also wanted to make the most of the last few months where her clothes actually fit her. When she arrived, Ryan escorted her to the top floor of the building.
When she stepped out of the elevator, her mouth fell open slightly. Noah’s bachelor pad turned out to be an enormous penthouse suite — it must have been four times the size of her own apartment.
Of course it’s extravagant. Sophie shouldn’t have expected anything less.
Noah stood outside the elevator, a giant smile on his face. “Hey, Soph.”
Soph?Noah had never called her by her nickname before.
“Hello,” she replied. Ryan took the elevator back down and Noah took her coat to hang up.
“Please, make yourself at home,” he told her.
She followed him towards the kitchen, ignoring his comment. She wasn’t sure if moving in together would be the best decision. A pleasant smell of fresh herbs wafted over her as they entered the large, airy kitchen.
“So what are you making me?” she asked.
