“Get your disgusting hands off of me!”
My blood froze when I heard Giselle’s scream.
“How about I cut her unborn child from her belly?” Angelo asked. “Would that bring you to your knees?”
Furious tears fogged my vision, and I clenched my fists. “I’ll kneel if you want, but you have to promise to let her go.”
“Hmmm.” Angelo was quiet for a moment, contemplating my offer. “Why would I do that?”
“Because it’s me you want, goddammit!” I growled. “I’ll even let you put a bullet in my chest if it means I get to save Giselle and my unborn child.”
“No, Nikolai,” Giselle cried over the phone. The pain in her voice slit through my heart like the edge of a blade. “Don’t come here. I’d rather die than lose you, please.”
“I’m not going to die,” I assured her. I didn’t give a fuck if I did. I just wanted her home and safe.
“All of this is my fault. I thought he would let you live if I came. I’m so sorry.”
A bitter smile curled my lips. “It’s not your fault, dorogaya.I’m sorry I didn’t protect you better.”
I heard a thud to the ground and then a cry from Giselle. That fucker shoved her to the floor.
“You have ten minutes to get here and maybe I’ll consider exchanging her life your yours. See you, brother-in-law.” He hung up.
I didn’t realize I’d been clenching the phone until the screen clacked and shattered in my hand.
Vlad regarded me carefully. “You’re not considering his offer, are you?”
“I am.”
“That psycho won’t let you leave there alive. He’ll kill you.”
I strode to the door and Vlad fell in steps behind me. “I don’t fucking care.”
“Well, I care,” he retorted. He held my wrist and whirled me around. “I don’t care if you’re ready to hang on a cross, Nikolai. You’re my brother and I won’t lose you.”
“I won’t lose Giselle or our baby.” I planted a hand on my hips and raked the other through my hair when I realized I’d raised my voice at Vlad. I shouldn’t have, he wasn’t to be blamed for any of this, but I was too furious.
“Giselle is a Vadim. She’s family,” he said gently. “We’ll save her, but you have to promise me you won’t do anything stupid like surrendering yourself to Angelo.”
I patted my brother’s shoulder. “I’m not stupid, Vlad. I know that fucker won’t let Giselle go even if I let him drive a knife through me.”
His eyes lightened and he forced a smile. “Good. Now let’s go save your woman.”
Chapter 25 - Giselle
“Do you want to hear the story?”
I dared to glance up at Angelo. He’d made me sit on the cold floor across his table as if I was some sort of slave, while he sat on his contemporary mesh chair, a cigar in one hand and a glass of scotch in the other.
His legs were propped on the table, and he looked so big and intimidating, but nowhere as big and dominating as Nikolai or any of his brothers.
“What story?” I asked, my voice trembling from all the crying I’d done since morning and from sitting on the cold tiled floor for too long.
He inhaled his cigar and puffed the smoke in the air. “The story of how your mother met my father.”
I shuddered. The resemblance was there between me and Angelo. We had the same brown eyes and dark hair. The same fair skin which I assumed was from Giovanni Pietro, still, it was hard to believe this monster in front of me was my half-brother.
I’d always thought my father was heartless, but I didn’t expect that a cold-blooded killer like Giovanni would be my father.
