I glance to Arryn’s sleeping form and pick up the syringe, breathing a sigh of relief when I see it still completely full and then go about unplugging her machines. By the looks of it, she is only on pain meds, a bandage on her arm from where the bullet had sliced through her. I pull the sheets back and slide my arms under her slumbering frame, hauling her to me and then I run.

And I keep running, only stopping once at my place to grab a few supplies and my equipment before I end up at the docks, phone in hand and calling my brother.

I was going back to the island, and I needed Torin’s help.

Chapter Ten

“The fuck is this!?” Torin growls, his anger twisting his features as he takes in the sleeping girl in my arms, still dressed in her hospital gown but now with my jacket covering her from the winter chill.

“We need to hide.”

“Rett, you can’t just go around kidnapping women!” He practically roars, “What did you give her!?”

“Now hold on, who said I gave her anything?”

Torin stares at me blankly.

“She’s on pain meds, I haven’t given her anything yet.”

“Yet!?”

“Look, if we don’t leave, she’ll die, and the girl doesn’t like me very much right now, so yes, I will sedate her if I need to.”

“Fucking hell.”

“Oh hush, brother,” I roll my eyes at his dramatics, “She’s just mad right now, she won’t stay mad at me.”

“And pray tell,” Torin drawls, shaking his head, “Why is she mad at you?”

“Those are details you don’t need to know.”

“If I’m aiding you in kidnapping this poor girl, the least you can do is tell me what the fuck you did to put her life in danger.”

“Why do you assume I had anything to do with it?”

He cocks a brow.

“Her father hired me,” I snap, “To take out two targets, but the targets took out my employer before I got the chance to close the job. Now Arryn here has a hit on her head since she saw them do it.”

“So, take out the employer?” Torin scoffs, “No employer, no payout.”

“Can’t, I lost them.”

His laugh is loud in the quiet night, echoing through the empty docks where his boat idles in the water.

“Are you going to let us on or not?” I hiss.

He throws out an arm dramatically, “Hop on in.”

I gently hand Arryn over to Torin, who takes her down to the single cabin below deck, as I grab the duffel from the car and jump onto the boat. Torin shakes his head at me, acting all fucking high and mighty like he has any right to think less of me for wanting to save the girl.

If it were Maya, his new wife, this would be a whole different story, and speaking of Maya…

“Don’t tell Maya about this.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t need her riding me for the next god knows how long.”
