LORDES

Was a really celebrating the life of the bastard that seduced an Irish Catholic nun? It sure looked that way. I was in a room full of criminals. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I had warmed up to the idea of having half siblings, but all these other people I didn’t care to know. I didn’t trust these people. I appreciated Nicco didn’t introduce me as his brother. He referred to me as his friend. I didn’t want the questions that came with being related to them.

There were so many people to keep track of: the Capello’s, the Ruffino’s, the Graziano’s and the LaGrassa’s. There were soldiers, capos, and everyone in between from various states. It was just too much at once. I tried to deny it, but it was a little intriguing. Some of these wise guys were really calling Vincenzo 50 Cenzo. Just yesterday I was watching my other half brother dismember a body with a power saw.

To think all these people were under the command of Nicco. He had all this power. I could see why he was so cocky and arrogant. Who wouldn’t be under the circumstances? These people had to obey him. These people took instructions from him. Now, he ran this entire organization. His crown was heavy, but he wore it like a king.

When Nicco suggested we leave, I was ready. I was over this party an hour ago. I walked the floor looking for my girl. I spotted her sitting at a table full of women. I pried Bria from a frivolous conversation with Valentina. I still couldn’t believe I’d flown to Vegas and gained two sisters and two brothers.

We exited the back, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the penthouse. A funeral, burial and party all in one day was overwhelming. I could tell Bria was getting tired. She looked beautiful tonight. I wanted to get one quick release before she fell asleep on me. I got a quick glimpse of the sexy lingerie she had on under her dress. I couldn’t wait to remove it with my teeth.

The Bentley was parked in the venue's rear entrance and waiting to whisk us away. Nicco was coming back with us to the penthouse instead of going back home with his family. I didn’t judge him. I believed he stayed away from them for their own safety.

I knew he had business to conduct now that his father was in the Bregoli mausoleum. He said there would be a meeting once Dom was put to rest. With Dom gone, there had to be some restructuring in the organization. With the murder, there were a few things that could impact his decisions.

I hadn’t booked our flights back to Chicago just yet. I knew Bria was aching to leave this place. I felt the same way. But I wanted to help my brother. I wanted to help Nicco find the person who poisoned Dom. I knew I shouldn’t care. I don’t think I cared about solving Dom’s murder. I only cared about Nicco, and I wanted to aid him in this endeavor.

Finding this person or persons wouldn’t happen overnight. I didn’t know how I could persuade Bria to stay here in Vegas for just a little while longer. I was determined to figure something out. But for now, we had to go back to Chicago. I promised her we would and couldn’t let her down.

Lefty was driving and Righty was beside him in the front seat. They pulled out of the alleyway and we cruised along the streets on the way back to the Palladium. Las Vegas was a picturesque place at night. All the lights, action and general fanfare were pretty alluring. I wished I were here with Bria under different circumstances.

Nicco sat peacefully behind Righty. He was thinking or overthinking. I could tell. I held Bria’s hand in my lap. She rested her head on my shoulder. I really didn’t want her to fall asleep. I was sure tonight’s festivities were tiresome and boring to her. I couldn’t blame her if she couldn’t stay awake.

“I’m only going to rest my eyes.” She whispered, only for me to hear.

I reached over and pushed her hair away from her face. She was gorgeous and mine. I messed up. I had to get her to trust me again. I knew we would be together forever. Absolutely nothing could change that. There were no other options. I could never love anyone the way I loved her. I was going to have to do everything in my power to make it right with us. First thing on my list, I had to stop lying and concealing things from her. But the Lauren secret would remain just as she died— a secret. I also couldn’t share that I witnessed Cenzo and Nicco torture, kill, and mutilate a prostitute.

I turned from gazing at Bria to glance out the window. It was dark out now, but still not as dark as the Chicago streets at night.

There was one long blink from my eyelids, or that’s what I felt like— that’s when I saw them. All black. My heart raced. I swallowed hard.

Fuck!

My body stiffened when I locked eyes with a gun with an extended clip. I didn’t freeze, but I didn’t move fast enough. A motorcycle was speeding down the street on my side of Nicco’s Bentley.

Fuck! I said it in my head, but it didn’t come out of my mouth.

The driver and passenger on the motorcycle were staring right into my eyes even though the windows of the Bentley were darkly tinted.

Blam! Blam! Blam! The shots rang out just as the Lefty slammed his foot on the gas. We took off speeding in an area that was absent of any heavy traffic. We couldn’t outrun a motorcycle. Could we? My reflexes were too slow. I looked to my right and soon realized we definitely couldn’t outrun two motorcycles. There on Nicco’s side of the car rode another duo of men dressed in all black and raining bullets at the car.

The sound of bullets brought Bria to attention as I was frantically pushing her head and body down to the floor of the car.

“Get down!” Nicco yelled. He had a voice, and I had nothing. I couldn’t speak as the anger flooded my body.

The popping sound crackled off the glass windows of the car. I suddenly understood that we were surrounded by bulletproof glass. Nicco was prepared, but would this be enough protection?

Shit! The shooting was rapid and never-ending.

I quickly looked down at the Bria. I could see her startled eyes glowing in utter darkness. I pushed her body as far down is into the carpet of the car as I could. She crouched in fear and I tried to cover her body with my own. I needed a weapon. I was a good shot and these motorcycle bandits were relentless.

Without hesitation, there was a gun shoved into the palm of my hand. Nicco had given me a Glock 19 that I took readily. Nicco’s other hand housed another Glock. He was ready before I could think about my next move. Multiple bullets popped on the ballistic glass of the Bentley. I ducked as if their bullets were piercing their way through our transparent amour. The sounds of gunfire surrounded us like a musical beat. Instead of feeling fear, I was pissed off. The hottest hell bubbled in my chest. Enough was enough.

Who the fuck were these assholes? What the fuck did they think they were doing?

It was hard to think with a motorcycle on my left and another motorcycle on the right spraying bullets at us. But I didn’t have much of a choice. Lefty was doing everything he could to get away from the deranged assassins. He’s turned the steering wheel a hard right and tried to knock the duo on the left off their crotch rocket.

It seemed the volume raised in my ears. The sound of bullets was closer than I thought. Righty had already lowered his window and was blasting back from the front passenger seat.
