“Yes, I saw something on a local news broadcast.”
“Are you aware that the body recovered was a female?”
“Yes.”
“Your number and contact information was in the deceased cell phone.”
“Okay.”
“Are you aware that Lillian Shelby was the body recovered?”
“Yes, I learned the name after my assistant told me you wanted to interview me in regards to Lillian Shelby. I didn’t remember her at first, but I did a quick Google search.”
“You didn’t remember her?” Rodriguez asked.
“I meet and come into contact with a lot of people in my line of work.”
“And what is it that you do here?”
“Tech, applications and design.”
Rodriguez’s forehead creased. He didn’t know what I was talking about. “How did you know the deceased?”
“We went out a few times”
“On dates?” He asked.
“Yes, we dated for a short period of time may be two or three weeks a month max. It was sometime last year.”
“Have you had any contact with Ms. Shelby this year?”
“No, I haven’t. We don’t run in the same circles. I didn’t know anything about her current life.”
“Where did you meet Ms. Shelby?”
“I believe we met at a charity event. Yes, it was a charity event at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital.”
“Did you know where Ms. Shelby worked?”
“No, I didn’t. I just knew she was in real estate. I didn’t have any location information on her. I remember she was a nice girl.”
“What do you mean by nice?”
“Pleasant, agreeable, nice to be around. We hooked up a few times. Went on dates, ate at restaurants. But I didn’t know any personal information about her. Our encounters were casual. I didn’t know her well.”
“Do you normally sleep with women you don’t know well?” The shocking question came directly from Lauren. There was something going on with her. I couldn’t out my finger on it.
“I do sleep with women I don’t know well from time to time.” I contained my smirk. She was one of those very women. “I’m single, so I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with it.”
“Oh, no sir, your personal life is your business.” Detective Rodriguez gave Lauren a warning look.Is this good cop and bad cop?
“So you weren’t aware if she had a husband, boyfriend, or significant other?” He restarted his interrogation.
“I wouldn’t know. I assumed she was single, but I never asked. She wasn’t wearing a ring.”
“We are checking all the contacts in her cell phone. We know that there was no contact since last year but this is a high-profile case and we have to be thorough. We have to check every lead.”
“I understand.” I nodded.
