“The relationship.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Boss, you’ve been dating the same woman for four months.”

“No, I haven’t.” I stopped looking at the computer screen to think about it.

“Dates and times are my forte. It’s been four months with the same woman.”

I looked up into the empty air. I had to think hard. “Has it been that long?”

“Yes. Not to mention you’ve spent a shit ton of money on her.”

“Have I?” I hadn’t been keeping track.

“Yes, but you can afford it, not a big deal.”

“You said four months?” How is it that I didn’t know that? Should I celebrate anniversaries or something?

“Yes sir. It appears you like this one.”

“Yes.” I didn’t lie to my assistant. But I felt the need to explain. “She’s different, special, she’s I don’t know. I didn’t know that much time had passed. Four months. Huh.”

“It’s a record. You have never made it to five weeks with anyone the entire time I’ve been working for you. I haven’t had to write any checks for Ms. Harris.”

“Bria would be insulted. She would rip the check up in my face. She’s educated and smart.”

“You said she’s been to law school.”

“Yes, and she has her house. I believe it’s paid for. She has some money. I’m sure she’s okay without me or my gifts.” Four months was a milestone for me and I couldn’t even believe it. It felt like I met her a week ago. Things were still fresh and new.

“So you’re not tired of her.”

“No, not at all. She’s not clingy. She’s perfect the way she is. I like everything about her. She doesn’t annoy me.”

“Words I’ve never heard you say before in regards to any woman.”

“Things change.”

“In a big way.” Christian was gloating.

“I’m keeping her.”

“For how long?”

“Forever.” I blurted and I knew I was losing it for this woman. Forever was a long time but I didn’t even have any thoughts that led to me getting rid of her. Why would I give her away to some other guy? I wasn’t a complete moron. I knew what I had.

Christian started laughing at me. He gathered the shoes and walked over to my desk.

“I couldn’t get dinner reservations at Haragios for tonight so I booked them for tomorrow.”

“That’s fine. What time?”

“Eight sharp. Did you happen to see the news yesterday?”

“No, I didn’t. What happened?”

“The CPD pulled a body out of the Chicago river a few days ago.”
