“To you, maybe but so far I’m okay.” I knew I wouldn’t be able to convince Khia. I wasn’t an idiot. Lord could be too good to be true. I wasn’t going to condemn this man when he hadn’t done anything harmful to me. All he did was show me a good time. He desired me and I hadn’t felt that way in years. My sister had her husband and kids and I had no one. I was alone all the time. Even if Lord kicked me to the curb tomorrow I still had fun today.

“I do not trust this man.”

“I hear you loud and clear.” I wanted this conversation to be over. Khia had really been to overprotective after our parents died.

Brett noticed a customer enter the store and he slide away from us to tend to the shopper.

“I have to go pick up my son. I will call you later.” She leaned in for a hug that I returned. I knew she had good intentions and she was only looking out for me. But damn let me live.

“Okay.”

Brett waved bye to her and I watched her leave the store. I waited awhile before I sent a thank you text to Lord.

Chapter Nine

LORDES

Four Months Later

My workday was going as planned. I worked all morning. I had a few meetings to tend to that went satisfactory. I ordered a few things for Bria and had them sent to my office. I opened the shoeboxes before my next meeting. I needed to see them and make sure they were exactly what I wanted, three pairs of Aquazzura heels. I went to the Neiman Marcus website and ordered them just for her.

I had turned into a generous gift giver. I loved buying gifts for Bria. She told me not spend so much money on her but I did exactly what I wanted to do. Bria was a beautiful woman with a stunning personality and she deserved to be showered with gifts.

I called my assistant into my office. I needed him to do what he always did, take care of the important things.

Christian was married to his college sweetheart. He seemed to be happy. He understood me and how I did things. He was my right hand. He was loyal and an asset to me in so many ways, honestly too many to count.

He walked into my office wearing his customary smile.

“Yes boss. What do you need?”

“I need to you to send these items out.” I waved my hand over to the coffee table where the open boxes sat.

Christian walked over to table and peeked into the boxes. “Shoes, nice.”

“I just need you to repackage them and send them out.”

“You want me to send it to Miss Harris.”

Who else? “Yes.” I looked over and Christian was staring down at me. There was a reason for this. “Christian, is there something you want to say to me?”

“No, not really. I just wanted to make sure I mailed the shoes to the right address and the right person.”

Now I was really curious. What was he getting at? There was something on his mind and I hated when he made me pull it out of him.

“You need to just say what’s on your mind.” I demanded.

“Mr. Donovan, it’s the same lady.”

Now he was calling me Mr. Donovan. Something was up. “What? Same lady? What are you talking about?”

“Labria Harris.”

“Right. Why wouldn’t it be? What’s wrong with you? Spill it!” Now he was getting irritating.

“I don’t want to say anything. I don’t want to jinx it.”

“Jinx what?” I sat up in my chair. He had my undivided attention.
