Fox leans in until his lips are brushing my ear. There I have another of Mark’s creations. Sitting in both of my ears is a thin mesh plug that blocks much of the noise around me. I know it sounds like earplugs, right? Wrong. If anyone speaks directly into my ear, the sound is amplified so I can hear them loud and clear, no matter how much sound surrounds us.
“I have eyes on Howard. I assume that’s who you’re looking for?” I fight back a shiver as his hot breath hits me but manage to nod. “Good, let me take you to him.”
I don’t know if Mark was able to provide them with the same earpieces, as we have a limited quantity, so I just nod again.
Fox slips my hand into his much larger one, linking our fingers together as he leads me across the dark room. We come to a stop outside one of the alcoves. I duck my head around the material to sneak a peek inside, finding Howard inside with one of my dancers. He’s stroking his cock as she strips for him. I scan the rest of the alcove, looking for his wife, but she’s nowhere to be found.
As if understanding what—or who—I’m searching for, Fox leans over again. “She’s too busy getting railed by Cary and his wife to worry about her husband right now.”
Part of me is grateful for that, but part of me also would like to vomit at the visual inside my head right now. I could’ve gone the rest of my life without ever imagining that. I swallow around the lump in my throat, willing myself not to vomit.
“Did you need help?” Fox asks, pressing himself along my back, and I shake my head.
I’d love to stay in his arms for just a little bit longer, but I don’t have time for that if I want to finish this tonight. I step forward, turning at the last moment to pull him down for a quick kiss.
“Soon,” I whisper against his lips, knowing he won’t hear me. But hopefully, he understands.
He smiles, shooting me a wink before spinning on his heel and disappearing into the crowd. It’s like one second he’s there, and the next he’s gone. I’d been watching him the whole time and still had no idea how he’d done it.
I’ll have to ask him to teach me that particular trick.
I push the material aside, stepping into the alcove. The dancer turns, and I realize it’s Macy. I give her a nod, and she keeps dancing—though she does step further away from Howard. I don’t know how she ended up stuck with this asshole, but she now knows he’s one of the men I’m hunting tonight.
All the people who work for me know exactly what I do—that I punish bad people. Most of them have offered on more than one occasion to help me, but they know I prefer to work solo. If only they knew I was working with not one but three men tonight, they’d probably be shocked.
That makes me giggle as I drop beside Howard on the loveseat. He turns to me with wide eyes. His pupils are blown, and I wonder if he’s on more than Chaos. He smiles, reaching out with his free hand to stroke my face.
“You’re the angel of death. Have you come to make me pay for my sins finally?”
To say I’m shocked by his words is putting things lightly.
But it doesn’t take me long to move past my surprise.
“I have. Vengeance will be mine.”
Howard nods slowly, tucking his cock away before turning to face Macy. “Thank you for the dance. Enjoy your evening.”
Macy’s eyes are wide as she glances at me. I incline my head, and she scurries away.
Meanwhile, I stand and offer my hand to Howard. “Are you ready?”
“I am. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.” His words are whispered, so quiet that I almost don’t hear him over the music. He places his hand in mine with a look of reverence.
Turning away from him, I lead him out a hidden door—yeah, this house has a ton of them—and toward the other entrance into the basement. I figure it’s best to be cautious in case anyone is watching who shouldn’t be. Howard doesn’t fight me in any way, and when I glance back at him, he seems... happy? While that doesn’t make sense to me, what the hell do I know?
It takes us longer to make it to the other side of the house, but once we reach the door, I push it open. Austin looms in the doorway, eyes narrowed as he takes in Howard. He looks confused when he realizes that Howard seems to come along willingly.
“Who is this, angel of death?”
“This is my helper. You don’t think the angel of death is able to avenge everyone by herself, do you?”
Howard considers my words before nodding. “That makes sense. What happens now?”
I glance at Austin before focusing my attention on Howard once more. “Do you know why I’m seeking vengeance from you, Howard?”
“There are so many sins I have to atone for. I don’t know which one has drawn your ire.”
My hand tightens on his as my anger rises. I don’t think I want to know all the things that he’s done. I think it would end up with his death here and now, and that would be a disappointment.
