Page 26 of Demanding Mob Boss

I hate that term.Normal people. My aunt and uncle were always telling me to act like a normal person when all I could do was act like myself. What they meant though, was to act the way they did. Only, I didn't really like them, so why would I want to be the same as them?

"Some people think I don't have the same emotions as so-called normal people either."

"But you do. I know you do."

I nod. "I know I do too. They don't express the same way with me though."

"And you don't mind working for a man who kills people."

"Does he? Is that what it means to be a mob boss?" I ask curiously.

"He has. You can't be a made man without killing and you can't be the boss unless you are a member of the mob."

"Can women be made men?"

"Depends on the organization, but my brother has women that work for him."

"I know. I'm a woman."

"I mean on the mob side. Máire has four bodyguards with her in Ireland. Two of them are women. They scare the crap out of me, but I'm glad they're keeping her safe. My brother might not be touchy feely, but he's also not a misogynist or a bigot. So, he's got that going for him."

I think he has a lot going for him, but if I say that, Shea will know I have a crush on her brother.

"I never had a brother, but I have cousins and they're both of those things."

"Did you grow up with them?"

"I lived with them from when I was ten until I turned eighteen."

"You had to get away from them, huh?"

"Their parents kicked me out. They said their duty was done."

"That's awful."

Was it? I don't have a lot of experience with family dynamics. "It was scary. If Mrs. Hart hadn't let me and Ini sleep in her living room, we would have ended up in a shelter."

Shea stares at me like she can't believe what I'm saying.

I like her innocence, but I wish she appreciated her brother more. "Neither of my cousins are in the mob, but they wouldn't cross the street to give me a sandwich if I was starving either."

"You're saying I'm lucky to have my bossy older brother."

I'll take Finally Listening for the win, Alex.

Chapter 9

CIAN

"The supplier is still in the wind." Lachlan frowns. "The Murphy clan is looking too, but they haven't found him."

"We need the names of the people in the gang's inner circle to dismantle it." I won't let a threat like this remain in my city. "Does Walsh have information for us?"

Lachlan shakes his head. "He wouldn't tell us who he's meeting with to negotiate the dealers staying in his territory. Walsh is pissed about how we handled the dealers in ours."

"We warned him." What the hell was the man's problem? Did he really think he could negotiate with a gang that hadn't approached him in the first place to deal in his territory?

"Our contacts in the Walsh mob are looking into it."
