"Or just to keep the territory he's got. Once we've gotEl Fantasmaand her lieutenants in our hands for questioning, we'll find out. If I'm wrong, then no harm. No foul." But if I'm right, then Walsh loses his life and his territory. It's as simple as that.
Quinn wants to split the territory between us and at first that's what I was thinking, but our grandfather's kept the Walsh mob in place for a reason. They're a buffer between two powerful mob families. We're going to keep them that way, just with a boss that Quinn and I handpick.
Chapter 31
ANNA
As I move around Cian's apartment after he leaves, I keep my phone with me, set up so that the camera lens can always see me.
He texts me.
Cian:Thank you.
And I know he means the phone access so he can watch me. But it's not just for him. Having his eyes on me brings me more internal calm than my rhyme.
I'm watching a show about building houses in Nova Scotia on my phone when my bodyguard arrives.
His knock is loud, startling me. I pull up the app Connor installed on my phone that accesses the cameras in the lobby, allowing me to see who is standing outside Cian's door. It's Tommy and he has a set of luggage with him that I've never seen before.
I'm showered and wearing a fresh t-shirt from Cian's closet, so I open the door to let him in.
I didn't like washing Cian's scent off of me, but I don't want to share our intimate times with anyone else either. And the scent of his semen on my skin was unmistakable.
"Here's your stuff. Just text me when you're ready to go downstairs. The boss said you aren't to leave his place without an escort."
"Okay, I'll text you." When I got my new phone, it had all my previous contacts in it and a few I hadn't had before.
Tommy, Arlo, Eoin, and Lachlan. I already had Cian's number. Connor and Shea's too. But his mother's number is in my contact list too as well as Jimmy's.
I don't know if Cian wants me to unpack my things, so I leave what I'm not using right now in the suitcases and store them in his walk-in closet after I pull out one of my softest tops and a pair of yoga pants that never chafe. It's a comfort outfit and I don't think Cian will mind me wearing it.
Leaving off my bra, I dig out my one hoodie and pull it on. With the air conditioning in Cian's office, it won't be too warm, regardless of the summer weather outside. And I'll only be wearing it when other people are around.
Which might be most of the day, I remind myself.
After I get dressed, it's barely past eight o'clock, so I pull out food to make breakfast for Cian. He has very little in his fridge and cupboards. But he does have what I need to make breakfast burritos. I make him two and myself one, which I eat while standing in the kitchen. Cleaning up the dirty dishes and pans goes quickly and I'm ready to leave a few minutes later.
I text Tommy and he knocks on the door less than a minute later. He's wearing a hoodie too, but when he shifts I see that it's to conceal the gun he's wearing in a hip holster. He nods to me, but doesn't try to talk and I appreciate it. I prefer silence with people I don't know.
Small talk is stressful.
When the elevator doors open, Connor is waiting. He looks me over, like checking for injuries. I know he's not worried that Cian hurt me last night. Our boss must have told him about what the detective did to me.
"They'll pay, don't you worry," he says to me as we head into his office outside of Cian's.
And I know I’m right. I nod in reply to Connor's words, but don't say anything. What is there to say? I'm not sure how Cian will deal with the detectives, but I know he will. Maybe it should bother me to think that a ruthless criminal is going to exact vengeance on my behalf, but it doesn't.
I'll take Scary Things that Make Me Happy again, Alex.
Too many people get away with cruelty. People with power rarely have consequences for their actions while people like me and my friends, pay the price for the actions of others all the time. Ini has no parents because hers were killed in a completely preventable fire. The shell company that owned their apartment didn't even get fined for the lack of proper fire safety.
Their pricey lawyer found a loophole in the interpretation of tenancy law and took advantage of it.
I feel nothing but relief that Cian will stop Grieves and Samuels from treating others like they did me. And I know he will.
Connor looks down at the container in my hand. I found it in Cian's cupboards and it's keeping his breakfast warm. The clear lid shows his egg and sausage burritos though.
"Did you make me one?" Connor asks, pointing to it.
