Lachlan is frowning. "Do you want one of the men to take you home while Cian is busy with Shea?"

Not sure why he's offering that, I shake my head. I don't want to leave until I know Cian doesn't need me anymore.

"Are you sure, lass?" Mrs. Doyle asks. "Cian won't fire you if you go home. I'll make sure of it."

"I know." Why would she think I was worried about that?

Mrs. Doyle doesn't look convinced. "He can be a wee intense."

I nod. It's true. Cian is deliciously intense. Especially when his focus is entirely on me. Aargh! I shove that thought down with the others. I cannot think about his sensual intensity right now. His mother is standing right there.

"I'm sorry I shoved you into his office," Lachlan says. "That wasn't fair to you."

"It's fine."

"I was right though, wasn't I? Your smile calmed him right down."

He'd found me cuddled up on my boss's lap, so blissed out I could barely string two words together, and Lachlan thought it was my smile that had calmed Cian? Mrs. Hart is right. Men can be very oblivious.

"You sent her into his office to calm him down?" Mrs. Doyle asked, her tone scolding. "That could have gone very badly."

"He is my friend. I wanted to help." I'm not sure what I should say right now to relieve the tension between Cian's mom and his right-hand man. Truth is pretty much my only option anyway.

Lachlan's phone buzzes and he slips it out of his suit breast pocket. He reads the screen.

"Shea will see me if Cian stays in the room." He curses.

"Aren't you glad she wants to see you?" I ask.

"Yes," he grinds out, like it's hard to say.

I wish I could understand what is upsetting him.

"It's not that she doesn't trust you, boyo. She probably thinks Cian will stop you from yelling at her for sneaking out," Mrs. Doyle says consolingly.

"Of course, she trusts you," I say. He knows that, but maybe it's another one of those things that has to be said out loud.

Lachlan grimaces, but he doesn't reply. He turns and leaves.

I’m pretty much alone with my boss's mother now. There are still three men in the room with us. Sully, and the two that were here when we arrived, but I don't know them and I doubt they will try to talk to me.

Presumably the one called Gulliver is still standing watch outside Shea's room.

"I could use a decent cup of coffee. Will you come with me, Anna?" Mrs. Doyle asks.

I saw a coffee bistro in the main lobby of the hospital on our way in. It shouldn't take us too long to get the other woman what she wants so I nod. I want to be back in the waiting room when Cian comes out of his sister's room though.

Sully follows us to the elevator.

"Do you like working for my son?" Mrs. Doyle asks as we make our slow descent.

"Yes. He's a very good boss."

"And you consider him a friend?" she asks.

Sully makes a strange noise, but when I look at him, his face is impassive.

"Yes."
