"Sit." I indicate the other end of the sectional with my chin.
Connor sits on the edge, instead of relaxing against the back like he usually does. His body buzzes with nervous energy.
Narrowing my eyes at him, I ask, "What the fuck, Connor?"
"Anna doesn't like you saying that word."
"She's not here." I don't bother to hide my annoyance at that situation from my cousin.
He knows how far gone I am on my girl.
Connors lips tilt briefly in a smile. "You have got it bad, Boss."
I don't deny it. I just wait. Connor wants to talk to me. He'll say what he needs to say.
"I'm gay," he blurts out and his muscles tense in preparation for movement.
"Okay."
He frowns at me. "Nobody is gay in the mob."
"You are proof that's not true."
"Elliott is my boyfriend."
"Is it serious?" If it is, Elliott will have to get the training we give spouses and live-in lovers.
"He had my baby."
"He?" I ask, confused.
"Yes." Connor sighs. "He was still presenting as a she when we hooked up. I was looking for a one-night stand to prove to the guys I'm like them."
"He's more than a one-night stand if he gave birth to your baby." Even if they aren't committed to each other, Elliott is family now.
"He is. He found me after starting his transition. He was scared of how I'd react."
"He's your boyfriend now. You couldn't have fucked up too much."
Connor laughs and finally relaxes against the sofa. "I was seriously into him before I found out the baby in the stroller he was pushing was mine. He looked familiar, but I didn't realize he was my one hookup from over a year ago."
"Your ma is going to smother that kid." My aunt wants grandchildren and she's not shy about it.
Connor is her only kid. He's only twenty-two. I figured she had some years of hinting ahead of her. I was wrong.
"Yeah. Dot might be the one thing that saves me from my parents disowning me when they find out I'm gay."
"Jimmy and Lila aren't bigots."
"It's different when it's your own kid."
"You know this how?"
"Friends."
"Well, your friends don't have Jimmy and Lila for parents."
"Anna said you wouldn't care."
