Storm opened her eyes and looked at him. He didn’t look happy at all.
“I despise when people lie to me. If you want to lie, then don’t say anything at all.”
She nodded her head. “Yes, sir.”
“Now, answer the questions. All of them.”
Taking in a shaky breath, she started to talk. “I’ve lived here since I moved to New York. I haven’t gotten paid yet to buy food or medicine. I was just holding out until I got paid.”
She looked down at her hands, feeling embarrassed about everything. Miles wouldn’t understand why she sent money to her parents and made herself miserable.
“Do you get paid so little you can’t pay for a decent apartment or food?” Miles asked.
Storm leaned into the couch and closed her eyes. Exhaustion weighed down on her with all the questions he continued to ask. She just wanted to be left alone right now.
“I’m tired,” she whispered. “Can I take a nap?”
She knew she couldn’t avoid the questions for long, but she really was tired and a nap sounded so nice right now. Storm wanted to snuggle up to Mika, who waited in her bed. It sounded so glorious.
“You’re going to answer the questions sooner or later, but it doesn’t have to be right now,” he replied. “Do you need anything?”
“Snuggles,” she replied, half asleep.
Right away, she wanted to go back in time and take it back. She shouldn’t have asked for that. She didn’t want to get attached and snuggles were a good way for her to feed the attachment.
She went to open her mouth, but Miles cut her off.
“I’ll snuggle with you until you go to sleep. Then I’ll put you in bed,” he replied.
She could hear him get off the couch where he sat and make his way toward her. His warm embrace enveloped her, and she couldn’t help but sigh.
It felt so good. The heat against her body warmed her up.
Storm didn’t realize how cold she was until he had gotten closer to her. Glorious. She wished she could retain her body heat like him.
“Cold?” he asked.
“Yes,” she mumbled.
They sat in silence for a couple of minutes, Storm snuggled up to his side.
“Does the heater not work?” he asked. “It’s so cold in here.”
“Broken.”
With winter arriving, Storm wasn't sure how much longer she could handle having the heater broken. It was freezing outside and the only relief she got was when she went to work.
Storm heard Miles talking but didn’t register anything else as she fell asleep.
CHAPTER NINE
MILES
“I’ll get that fixed for you,” he softly said as she fell asleep.
Storm was cuddled into his side. She looked so peaceful and he didn’t want to move her. What if he woke her when he picked her up and put her into bed?
He felt bad asking all those questions. He could tell how tired she was getting but he needed to know. It was going to eat him up inside if he didn’t and he was selfish.
