“I’m Ford’s little sister,” she said, fighting to contain an awkward laugh. “Yeah, his baby sister, so you might not want to—”

In he came, her brother and her boyfriend together.

“Stop drooling assholes,” Ford said, then glared at her. “Put some fucking clothes on.”

“Okay, okay,” she said, holding up a hand. “Geez, you’d think none of you ever saw a naked woman before.”

Said a lot about her brother’s sex life. Jagg’s she was less inclined to think about, unless it included her. Going into her bedroom to change, she brushed her hair and then was back in the breakroom seeking coffee.

Thankfully, Jagg was all alone, typing something into his phone in the kitchen.

Delicious and just what she needed.

Without a word, she went to stand at his side, resting her lips on his arm. Sleeping so close to him wasn’t easy when her mind wouldn’t give her a break. If they’d been able to wake up together—

He put his phone down and raised his arm to drape it over her. “You sleep okay?”

“Yes,” she said.

“You forget I know when you’re lying?”

“It’s relative. I slept better here than I would’ve slept at home or at Mila’s hotel.”

“When we don’t know what’s coming, you need all the sleep you can get.”

“I’ll remember that when we’re public and you’re trying to get some at three in the morning.”

“Won’t be a big bad coming for you then. I’ll keep you up all night long.”

He kissed her head and went to fill the coffee machine again. Damn guys must’ve drained the first pot. Containing her disappointment, she sat on a stool at the island to pull her purse across. She really should keep better track of it if people just wandered in and out all the time.

Her notes and laptop were there too; her life reduced to basically what she could carry. She’d take it over what the victims endured.

“Where were they last seen?” Jagg’s voice brought her attention up. “Each of the women, the victims? Remind me.”

“Heather went from work to the bank and then into a cab. Stephanie left Mila in the apartment to go meet her boyfriend—”

“All in the same area of the city?”

“No,” she said, pushing her notes toward him when he stopped opposite her at the island. The damn thing was too wide; she didn’t enjoy being so far away from him. “They were all over the city.” The way his brow came down in a frown was just so sweet. “You’re getting it.”

“Getting what?”

“The bug!” she shrieked, hopping off her stool to dash around and grab his arm in both hands. “You want to know too.”

Could it be someone finally believed her? Mila lost her friend and was invested in figuring it out so someone could be held accountable. Other than being a stand-up guy, Jagg cared because he believed her, it had to be.

“Are you gonna give it up?”

“Sex?” she asked. “Yes. The case? Never.”

“As long as you’re on it, I’m on it. But you’ve gotta follow the rules.”

She winced. “I’ve never been good at that.”

“No hiding things from me. No going places on your own. You didn’t follow your gut yesterday, don’t do that again.”

“What if my gut tells me to hide things from you?”
