Are you warm?
Yesss.
I’m jealous…
I wisssh I could share.
That’s sweet…
I don’t care for the way Aurelias treatsss you. Maybe I should bite him.
When I pictured that, it made me chuckle. You don’t want that taste in your mouth.
Perhapsss.
Do you know what the monster is?I watched Kingsnake and Aurelias talk quietly, their bodies pivoted in the direction from which we’d come.
Aurelias doesss.
What is it…?
A yeti.
A yeti? What is that?
It’sss like a bear but with long hair. As white as the snow, they’re hard to see.
That doesn’t sound so bad…
But they’re not the size of bearsss. They’re much, much bigger. Much.
A big-ass bear that can’t be seen… I guess that is a little scary.
Vampires can see in the dark as I can. Hopefully, they’ll see him approach…if he comes.
Hopefully he doesssn’t come at all.

I woke up with a start.
As if I’d been startled from a bad dream or a nightmare…except I hadn’t been dreaming at all.
My heart raced with palpitations. My skin was coated with sweat despite the cold. Then I felt it, the pressure all around me, maniacal rage, insatiable hunger. It was right up against me, inside me.
I yanked the zipper down and rolled out of my bag onto the snow.
Kingsnake turned to look at me, sitting on a log with Aurelias beside him.
“It’s here…” I tried to keep my voice as a whisper as I crawled toward them, unable to get to my feet because the panic was too much.
Aurelias stared at me coldly, like I was a dog begging for scraps.
“Larisa, what’s wrong?” Kingsnake grabbed me by the arm and helped me to my knees.
“The yeti.” I breathed so hard I could barely speak. “It’s here.”
Aurelias continued to look bored. “There’s no yeti here—”
